new serpentine belt is bigger than one on car

Today I went to replace the serpentine on my 02SE MT when I found that the new belt was a bit larger than the one on the car. I did not try to install the new belt. I was thinking I had gotten the wrong part as I had a lot of trouble ordering a new belt from Nissan. For some reason different Nissan part sites have all kinds of the wrong information when I use their drop downs rather than the VIN. After checking here I see I got the correct part number 11920-31U02 but then why is the belt larger? I would expect the old belt to be larger. I replaced this belt back in 2012 so I am confident I got the correct part although I did not look on the belt to see what is written. I guess there is no way to be certain without trying to install the new belt. Just not sure the tensioner can travel that much to take up the slack. Any help is appreciated.

The part # you stated is correct. Enjoy your new belt.

I came to this same conclusion. Belt fit fine. The old belt was not from Nissan so I'm guessing one of the few times I had the car serviced they must have replaced it with a Gates belt. Regardless, thanks for the response. Car is still going strong with 155k, original clutch too.

Nissan Belts are probably GATES anyway Nissan doesn't make bearings, belts, tires, batteries, P/S fluid, motor oil, etc! It's all part of there marketing department. Gates provide the best belts out there in my opinion especially their Green Striped Brand....

The Gates belt worked for at least the last 5 years (last time I had someone else do the service) without causing any bearing failures, etc. It was in decent condition, minor cracking, and had I known it was not 8 years old I likely would have left it. Between Nissan Parts not knowing the proper engine configuration for a 2002 Maxima and my own misunderstanding of when the previous belt was installed, this all could have been avoided. But I appreciate all the assistance I got so thanks again.
