What changes are made to agx shocks to fit 5th gen

I have a chance of buying a set of agx shocks from a friend of mine that he got from cattman. He sayed they are modified to fit the 2k+ maxima. Will they still fit my 4th gen though?? If not any idea what I would need to change.

releasedtruth 11-04-2003 08:01 AM

No they will not fit. Well, one half will, the other will not.

Ok any idea if I can change anything to make them fit?

The front struts are moded to bolt up and then 5th gen maximas have to buy front strut mounts. The rears will fit with no problem though. Not sure if 5th gen springs will fit on the rear, but I'm pretty sure the 4th gen. springs will fit properly.

Yeah his site says to use 4th gen springs which makes me think they will work. Quoted from his website...

Set of 4 KYB AGX adjustable struts (Cattman part #AGX-4) modified to fit the 2000+ Maxima/I30; installation requires minor modification of stock upper front strut mounts or replacement with same part from 1995-1999 Maxima series (Cattman #NISFM). The AGX adjustables are the most effective and versatile struts available for the Maxima/I30 today.

Doesnt really help me..lol..other than knowing I already have 99 strut mounts.

The only issue you will have is that the front strut mounting holes are modified (slotted) to fit the 5th gen. They should still fit on your 4th gen, but you need to make sure you position the struts properly on your car.

Mounting holes are changed for the top or the bottom where it attaches behind the brakes? Reason I ask is...if the mounts really are modified....up top..then why according to cattman can you modify up top...or just get a set of 95-99 mounts. Leads me to believe that they should work without issues. I emailed him..but no response as of yet.

The bottom holes are modified for 5th gens. The upper strut mounts must be shortened on 5th gens, or 4th gen mounts can be used instead. Your 4th gen mounts will work. That's what the AGX was designed to use.

I would say no and just get the GR-2s. It's a great strut. I would just wait until they come out with a non modded strut for our cars.

Ok well got the reply back from Brian over at cattman.

At first I just thought "nope, can't be done" but actually I think perhaps it can. We've replaced the front lower mounts (the ears that stick out with the two bolt holes in each) because the distance between the bolt holes is farther apart on the 2000+ so we could not drill out the existing mounts and had to put on larger ones.

Which means that if you did it just right, you could slot the upper hole downwards and they would fit the car. Only issue is that would have to be perfectly done or that side could be permantly out of alignment, but you could possible take those measurements very precisely from your stock struts.
