looking at an '00 Max SE

Test drove an '00 SE 5speed the other day, giving it some serious thought. Asking price is $13900 w/ 45,000 miles, seems to be in fantastic condition. shifts well, breaks seem good. But what things should I be looking for as far as mechanical problems, any kinks or issues w/ this year max?

Thanks guys

Gsilk 06-12-2004 12:37 PM

rotors suck on the car and often need to be resurfaced. paint chips easy and eventually you will have ignition coils misfiring. i think 13900 is a bit much. try to go down a bit.

Y2KMaxGXE-R 06-12-2004 12:39 PM

yeah try paying between 11 and 12 grand, and dont worry what others are saying too much. Most of these cars are built to last

Thing is I can not find an 00 body 5 speed for this much money and most that I see are asking the same money or more for 2x the miles

I was thinking about talking him down to arround 13

Gsilk 06-12-2004 01:38 PM

maybe you could search for max's in MA and NY. i saw a 2002 6-speed max here in CT going for around 15,600 with 27k miles.

unreal333 06-12-2004 01:57 PM

How much are ignition coils? Is that somthing I could fix one Saturday?

NYPD-Arnold 06-12-2004 02:17 PM

$14k @ 45k is a good price, as long as the car looks great in and out.

My SE @ 29k is worth 16,000 according to KBB.

If your buying from a dealer and spending more then 10 and in your case you would be spending around 14 have him warranty the car that way if anything happenes it wont be your problem other then that 00max is a great car and you will not regret buying one. Good Luck.

Yes they are ~ $250-$300 and can be replaced in about an hour or so

11 or 12k :nono: It's worth more than 11 or 12k The car only has 45k miles on it.

Ben 06-12-2004 07:43 PM

I payed 14.5K for my 2k 5 speed about 15 months ago. It only had 27k and was in fantasic shape.
That was without leather or bose though.
What you are looking at sounds like a good price. But they will most likely go down at least 500.

Does the car have leather? Bose?
What tires does it have (new tires for this car are particuarly pricey.)

Lots of ppl do b*tch on this site, but I bet 99% love their max. I do.

PS... KBB is heavily weighted towards dealer. Use Nada. Never pay more than that. :)

i woudl say dont get it just because its a 2000 that has the older engine in it w/ the lower HP. Go for a 2001 w/ 255 hp and new engine, or perhaps a 2002. I dont kow if you coudl afford it but i know my local dealer was sellin one w/ liek 55k miles and it was for 15 thousand dollars! Save for a bit and get a 01-03

Maximadmoiselle 06-12-2004 08:03 PM

Well, the cheapest 2000 GLEs I've seen go for 11-12k to say the least, and that's with a lot of miles on them. But the GLE is fully loaded, so if that SE has the leather/BOSE package you got yourself a deal if you can bring the price down to under 13k.

A 2001 Maxima does not have 255hp since it's a 3.0 222hp just like the 2k. But indeed if you feel like saving up some more before you buy, you can get a great 2002-3 Max. I saw someone selling his 2k2 SE for $14,500.

Wow well im sorry for all this time i was under the impression that i 2001 had 255. So they still had the older engines? Well thast cool i guess i learn something every day=] Well then i would say go w/ a 2002 because my next door neighbor has a 2002 black on black fully loaded 5 spd and that thing halls balls. They spend 19 on it though and it only had 9k miles. IMO they stole it =]

The 00 & 01 have the 3.0 V6 pulling out 222HP, the Anniversary Edition(2001) pulls out 225 though from the same engine, it's because they reworked the exhaust piping a little, this piping is also found the I30's for these years. A subtle difference but a key giveaway of this -> next time you see a Anniversary edition, it doesn't have the stock tip on it that you usually see on the 00 and 01.

What do you mean by the stock tip on it?

I've been told that the headlamps of the Anniversary are a tad more bronzey than the 00-01 though.

unreal333 06-13-2004 03:44 AM

Yea this is an 00 SE - I was aiming for the SE package, not really sure why lol -
umm, it has the 6 spoke 17" rims, and the bridgestone potenza tires. power driver seat, power moon roof 5spd -no leather, -no bose

How are these Maxima's in the snow? How are these tires in the snow? I live in New England, and I'll be giving up my 4x4 to own this car - I know the traction can't be as good as my 4x4, but hows the Max in the snow?

Thanks guys

jklx86 06-13-2004 05:03 AM

i got my 01 max 5spd for $10,500, with 53k on it 3 months ago in md....no problems yet. but theres a little paint damage on the hood, cuz the person i bought it from did all highway travel

ZIPPIN 06-13-2004 07:18 AM

drop a few more $ and get the 02. it is well worth the hids/more hp/nicer bumper and the grill is easily changeable

SEdge 06-13-2004 07:19 AM

as these other guys said, the only regret you'll have (i had the same regret) is not spending a bit more for the vq35. but if that's not an issue go for it. i paid 14.5K for my 2K, with 34K miles. a bit steep, but the condition was immaculate.

02-03's don't come in 5 spd, they have 6 spd.

Maxima itself is like any other front wheel driver car in the snow.
However, the potenzas are death traps. You would have to replace those immeadietly. They are pretty bad in wet weather and will get you killed in slush/snow. Figure that in what you are willing to pay.
You can check out the wheel and tire forum for suggestions. I persanally use the falken 512's they work well in snow and slush. The mich. pilots are a popular choice for those who can afford to spend $800 on tires. There just aren't a lot of tire options for those 17" wheels.

PS... Just my $.02, but without leather and bose, I would try to get them down 1K on the price. The 2k2+ engine is awsome but you will have a hard time finding one in the same price range most likely.

NYPD-Arnold 06-13-2004 08:43 AM

Unreal333: You live in New Hampshire, so getting HIDs stolen won't be a proble for you. I suggest to spend the additional 1k-1.5k and get a 2K2. It's a completely different car in many respects.

Death traps huh? ouch - I'll have to check out that tire/wheel page. Thing about the 02 is well the price difference for one, and also that I'm pressed for time as I have a buyer for my trunk (and at a good price) this week! But, I'm going to drive the car again today, to try and find a reason to not buy it

not true. 227 hp.

ru4real 06-13-2004 12:49 PM

Pri63 is right about the muffler. I have the AE and the muffler's dual tips angle downward instead of pointing straight out like a standard SE.

unreal333 06-13-2004 03:34 PM

Well, just got back from my second test drive - noticed a few things nothing big few scratches here and there, nothing a good buff and touch up paint can't fix

One thing I did notice was the car didn't seem to have a whole lot of pep - not really what was expecting for 222 horses - could this be due to a dirty sensor? Is it the MAF sensor that causes the power loss?

Also, does anyone have a car fax account, looking for a report on the car. Thanks guys much appreciated

Go through the stickies probably either here or in the general forum, I'm pretty sure there's a thread about autochecks.
