Sweeeet!

Sucks that there shop is in NY though...
Is this mod a DIY? If so i'll be truning the wrench this weekend! :grinno:

foodmanry Jun 23, 2004 01:40 PM

Yes it's about moderate to light difficulty on the DIY meter. If you have ever changed tranny fluid and dropped the pan then you can do a VB mod. Contact Jeff over there and he can set you up with a core exchange. By doing that you won't have any downtime on your max except for the hour or two needed to change out the core and install the tranny cooler. Yes you need a tranny cooler with this because the VB mod raises the temperature of your tranny fluid due to the increased pressures.

MannyNJ2k2max Jun 23, 2004 02:01 PM

beware of added abuse to an already questionable tranny.....

1) No you dont need a Tranny cooler. 2) No it does not increase the temp of the Tranny fluid. It actually keeps the tranny fluid cooler . And before the flaming begins I am no expert but this is what Maximum Tuning says. You dont need a Tranny cooler anymore with this mod then you do without this mod. As per Jeff.

foodmanry Jun 23, 2004 04:25 PM

Kevon....I think you misheard Jeff. Unless the mod has changed at all it still needs a tranny cooler because your tranny does run hotter. You might want to check and verify that because I guarantee you that anyone and everyone on this board who is running a VB mod if using a tranny cooler. Not because of it's "better," but rather it is needed.

And to the earlier poster, it will extend the life of the tranny as long as its installed with a tranny cooler.

tampamax Jun 23, 2004 05:37 PM

I don't believe you "have" to have a cooler, although i ran one with mine. The reason is that i would drive spiritedly and wanted to keep the heat down in the tranny. It had nothing to do with the VB mod requiring it becuase it does not cause more heated operating temps.

03BlkSETE Jun 23, 2004 06:06 PM

I'm with Kevon1 on this. I don't see how quicker shifts increase fluid temperatures. If anything it should run slightly cooler with the VB mod alone. I'm all ears though if someone has some specific evidence to the contrary.

sloppymax Jun 23, 2004 06:27 PM

ive always heard a cooler is recommended because of higher temps after the vb mod. i dont have the vb but this is from the faq on the main page. check it out HERE second question from the bottom. that states it is required to have a cooler.

Kevon1 Jun 23, 2004 06:46 PM

I heard him right

No I defintely heard him right. I had approx a 10min conversation with Jeff in regards to a tranny cooler when he drove me to a near by movie theater while the work was being done. Springs , Struts, Y-Pipe, Rotors & pads & VB mod. Any way according to Jeff the VB mod does not require a tranny cooler any more than a Maxima with out the VB mod . He stated the quicker shifts actually keep the tranny cooler than a maxima with out the VB mod . It is the long delayed shifts in our transmissions with out the VB mod that cause heat. He stated he would recommend a Tranny cooler only if you constantly beat on the car at a track week in & week out. Or if you towed stuff with your maxima on a regular basis . He said hey if you bring your car to the track on ocassion or were talking about spirited street driving there is no need for a cooler. But by no meens did I need a tranny cooler installed with the stage 2 VB mod . It wasent even a finacial thing because I was under the same impression that I would need one & he talked me out of one . But like I said I am no expert I am just going by what one mans professional opinion was.

Kevon1 Jun 23, 2004 06:54 PM

Actually.........

Actually I have another opinion.........I have met Jeff personally cant speak highly enough about this man. Very honest, easy going , Kind of felt like you allready have had a 100 conversations with him. But the automotive repair buisness in general is a shady buisness and its my understanding that there are only 2 places doing this VB mod for our cars one in L.I & one in CA. It could be very feasable that who ever was saying you needed a Tranny cooler for the VB mod was actually just figureing out another way of getting another $100 bucks out of a person intrested in getting this modifacation done to there car. And it certaintly wasent MAXIMUMTUNING in L.I.

foodmanry Jun 23, 2004 07:19 PM

Well when I ordered my VB mod from Jeff at MaximumTuning in LI he did HIGHLY recommend I use a tranny cooler. I actually had already purchased one from PepBoys because of the feedback I received when I posted about a VB mod so long ago. Jeff talked me into getting a B&M cooler. So in respect to your last post Kevon I think this contradicts it....

Any info on the Cali installer?

maximo-SE Jun 24, 2004 05:05 AM

does anyone how much this mod will cost you and how long is the install??

foodmanry Jun 24, 2004 06:12 AM

Cost you around $300 if you do it yourself. The install takes around an hour or two.

Donkey® Jun 24, 2004 06:34 AM

I have heard both sides. Some recommened cooler, others don't. When I got mine, I swapped out the fluid as well for some Amsoil stuff. I also am running a tranny cooler.

maximo-SE Jun 24, 2004 06:43 AM

300 DIY... means about 600 to have them do it for you?? :goofy: (its a guestimate with the crazy labor all shops charge nowadays.)

Quicksilver Jun 24, 2004 06:50 AM

It has to increase the temp of the tranny fluid. When the pressure of a fluid is increased in a closed system (meaning the diameter of the tubing hasn't changed...etc), the temperature of said fluid HAS to go up. It's just physics, folks. I would definitely do a cooler install if you plan on doing this mod...

Regardless if it is a "contradiction". My ride to the movie theater & conversation with Jeff was not a figment of my imagination. What I said was verified by Jeff. If you would like to call him yourself or to get any other info in regards to a VB mod here is his number ask him yourself  . (516)676-8470 ask for Jeff

I've been thinking about your response and I have a question. I'm probably off base here but I just want to make sure.

What about the function of time. If in a stock tranny fluid pressure increase a certain amount for longer time compared to a modified tranny where there is a greater increase in fluid pressure but for a shorter time, couldn't the fluid technically be cooler overall?

tampamax Jun 26, 2004 11:59 AM

The pressure is only higher for the shifts. That's what makes the shifts quicker. So for everyday driving on the street its your call. The brief higher line pressures are probably cancelled out by the less time the friction plates score across the steel bands during a shift. Honestly, what does it matter? You can install a cooler for 40 bucks or less. I run a cooler and redline synthetic in mine and it seems great after God only knows how many spirited miles and on the nitrous.

This arguement reminds me of a valet kid that was argueing with his boss when i came out for them to get my car. The kid had parked a car slanted one way(as all the others were) and his boss was ****ed because it wasn't parked in the opposite slant. The kid says "wtf difference does it make the car is parked were you wanted it. And truthfully we can fit 2 more cars in this cramped azz lot because of the way i parked it. Its not like someone is coming by to do a photo shoot on the biotch!" He's right for the little cost involved why not do it. It surely won't hurt anything(if you do it right).

Your analogy all the a good one is way off. There is a reason why the kid parking the cars is parking the cars. He is not payed to think he is payed to do as he is told. To many chefs in one kitchen makes for a burnt meal. On to the subject. A tranny cooler is not needed for the stage 2 VB mod. To say you need one is just plain wrong. Now on the other hand I fault no one for getting one. I will be installing one my self in about a week only to promote better overall temps in my tranny. Kind of like preventitive maintnance. I will be installing one for this reason & this reason only . Kind of like running synthetic oil it is not needed but why not give your baby the best.

Max1man Jun 26, 2004 09:39 PM

For a $40 part and minimal labor why would you even take a chance? I personally run a Hayden with my Mobiletek VB. Granted I'm a 4th Gen but it seems to me one thing remains the same for everyone...if your going to do it do it right. Maybe it isn't "necessary"..maybe it is. But for such a low $ item why would it even be a question?

Just my $.02

The point being it could be $40 bucks hey lets say it was $5 bucks. The question or the comment made was that you need one. And it is not true. Or people have been mislead. I am not sweatin the $40 bucks. I drive very few miles a year in my Maxima & I am not alone in this aspect I change my oil 4 times a year once every three months with Mobil 1 5w/30 Syn. I never get close to the 3000 mile interval. That would be $200 bucks a year in Syn oil changes opposed to $120 a year in non Syn changes for those who dont change there own oil. A difference of $80 bucks a year . Yet a vast majority of Maxima owners still use Non Syn oil. It runs cooler than non syn & its proven protection qualities last longer. Are Maxima owners wrong for not using it? No. To each is own. So when you say its only $ 40 bucks for a Tranny cooler so why not?. That same reasoning could be said for almost every inexpensive after market part out there. To say necessity is wrong. It is a luxury. Thats all I am saying. :grinno:
