By far the hardest mod I've ever done

Mods you can move this thread if you want, but the audio forum doesn't get much action and after taking me almost 2 weeks I've finally finished this and want to show it off.

After searching the org and several different car domain sites I never found anything on custom trunk set ups for subs and amps. Going from nothing this is what I came up with.

And Yes I have gone back and added carpet to hid the wire you can see coming from the amps. Before you could barely see them, but when you take a picture of it. You can easily see the wires.

My main concern was to be able to get to my spare tire without removing the sub box. Before, I had the amps mounted on the back of the box and this made it impossible to get the box out without unscrewing them.

I have made a totally brand new trunk flooring out of 1/4" plywood and added some supports underneath to hold all the weight. I weight 185 and with me laying in there it didn't budge at all.

the gold hinges are for the floor..... the silver hindes are attached to 2x6's that support the back of the box.

More pics and details are on my cardomain site on the audio page.... Check it out. Click HERE

Looks like you do nice work. Congrats.

Well not that much actually. Yeah I could have made a 1/2" plywood floor, but that is why I decided on the 1/4" floor with supports. The cover board for my amps and box is pretty thin and is supper lite. I say probably about 30 pounds. Half a sheet of 1/4" ply, 1 sheet of 1/8" ply, and some small pieces of wood for support.

Damn, your max is coming along really nicely! Congrats.

Looking pretty sweet. Well worth the time it took to complete.

Thanks, good to know my hard earned money and used time is paying off.

Looks nice! My sub is set up like that, only with 2-tone carpeting. Amps are hidden between the sub box and backseat though.

Looks like a real nice high quality installation you have there. Here's mine, it's got a similar theme of spare tire concern.

Looks clean man.

Ditto on the spare tire. I could have done two 10's easily if I had made the box a little different. But I was able to keep the spare and have a decent sized trunk. You can't really see it but the crossovers and amp are under plexi.

PS - anyone want to buy my amp rack? I'll throw in all of the electronics that you see PPI A600.2, Phoenix Gold M50 & MX2i, sub, crosses etc.

i was thinking of doing a box like you guys have done, by my biggest concern was taking it out and the weight. Right now it's just a mess back there.

Good job, looks great.

Have you noticed the added weight in your day-to-day driving at all?

ZIPPIN Sep 1, 2004 04:44 AM

looks very nice. did u build the box yourself??

A custom trunk enclosure is more than a mod. Looks great. :ben:

WildmanAL Sep 1, 2004 08:04 AM

MJG - No I haven't, but even with my system completely out I hardly notice anything.

-Zippin- No I didn't build the actual sub enclosure. I had a shop that knew their Kove subs build me one because the one I first built had a high frequency. I sounded awfull.

what if you need to put grocery's in the back or you children's stuff (bike, toys, scooter, ball)? heh

Well even before I kept almost nothing in the trunk and just used the back seat for grocery's and no kids...... yet.

I may go back and make something...... or just use some extra carpet I had left over to lay over the amps when hauling grocerys back from the store.

Quick question, where can I get carpet that matches the factory trunk carpet?? I bought some black, but it isn't a perfect match.

Good luck, most automotive carpet is generic. I went to a carpet store to try and find a match and it was close at best (interior gray over the Nintendo).

Any audio store that sells speaker box carpet has this color. They usually have this color which is dark grey, a light grey, and black.

From what the guys told me when I bought this carpet is that they have speaker carpet and trunk liner. Trunk liner isn't as fury as speaker carpet and is a lot thinner as well. I used trunk liner in this application and so did the store that originally built my box.

I'm pretty sure by the pic that xtantmaxima posted is that he used speaker carpet. It looks a lot bulkier than what I used.

For those that noticed that you can see the wires on the sides of than amps..... well I fixed that by putting a piece of carpet down there to cover them.
