Exhaust question - any idea?

Guys, after driving and listening to the Z/G35c/FX i was wondering if any one of you know how to achieve a similar sound from the exhaust like those cars do?

I tried installing a Powertech PT1011 muffler before and the drone was unbearable - took it off literally in less than an hour after it was installed. (i have an auto).

Others have suggested replacing the resonator with a straight/B-pipe. I don't mind keeping the OEM muffler - in fact that's what i want to do and add just a little more "vroom" without droning.

I know it will never sound exactly like the cars above, but again i just want something similar.

Any ideas?

max5spd 11-23-2004 07:06 PM

To be honest, I think my Frankencar sounds pretty similar. The G/FX is actually louder, but the tone is similar.

soundmike 11-23-2004 07:20 PM

Does it drone at any rpm though? It's probably going to sound better and easier to control for you since you have a manual.

Considering what happened with my Powertech i'd like to keep the costs down in case i don't like the sound at all. The sound clips online doesn't help much.

Frankencar or Cattman... from what I've heard from other .Org members, they have minimal drone....

VMaximus02 11-23-2004 08:21 PM

no drone here and I have an auto.

dblrr900 11-23-2004 08:23 PM

Trust me.... I have been allllllll over this issue. Frankencar I KNOW doesnt make any noise since I have dropped well over $1000 on al my exhaust setups. I hear that Cattman is close to the same, but the franken is the only one I can speak for.

The sound actually is pretty close to the G35, from what I can actually hear. It is pretty quiet. Check my car domain site either page 5 or 6 for my setups that I had. This one is def the best, NO DRONE at any level of the RPM band. Good luck.

max5spd 11-24-2004 07:59 AM

Yes, no drone.

maximillus 11-24-2004 08:09 AM

how about the greddy....how is dat?

soundmike 11-24-2004 08:29 AM

Thanks for the responses and suggestion guys. I'll check out the Frankencar and hope for the best. By the way, do you have just he Frankencar installed or do some of you have a Y as well?

That'll help me gauge how it will sound without the Y-pipe - which i'm not planning to get at all.

:)

dblrr900 11-24-2004 11:22 AM

The Y pipe or headers makes it sound even better. Then it growls. :D

Check this site: http://www.waveperformance.com/mufflerclips/muffler.htm

They have sounds of the Franken with headers and without. Dont forget to check out Cattman. The price is higher, but a lot of people swear by the customer service and exhaust.

i dont know what kind of mods uhave.. but i have y pipe and b pipe with stock muffler and the sound is awsome.. i cant here anything from in cabin .. but from outside it sound pretty good.. like g35c

I have the GReddy and it drones between 2000 rpms and 2500 rpms... it doesn't bother me since I shift at 3000-3500 anyways.... I personally like the sound of it; its a warmer throaty tone (which many people will call ricey, because they've only heard GReddy's on Hondas), but it'll probably be too loud once I put in my y-pipe.... just my biased opinion... ;)

max5spd 11-24-2004 04:16 PM

I don't have a Y, just the Frankencar.

Kevon1 11-24-2004 06:59 PM

Well I dont...........

Well I dont want to toot my own horn but......Toot, Toot......I have the Cattman Catback, Cattman Y-Pipe, Stillen Intake & I love the way the car sounds. Not to mention the fit & finish. Some minor droning at low rpm but nothing to bad. I spent a long time researching & listening to other peoples setups I went up to complete strangers on several different ocassions & asked if I could listen to there exhaust setups. I have heard them all the Frankencar which is nice but a little to quiet, The Greddy which was just too loud & finally the Cattman which was just right. My gut told me Cattman & if your able to search there is never a bad thing written about any Cattman products go check the for sale forums some one is always selling a Greddy smae goes for the others with the exception on Frankencar which has had some bad reports on customer service. You cant go wrong with Cattman. My 2 cents .

Nice set-up.... I have the Cattman y but haven't had time to put it in yet... instead of posting crap on here, maybe I should just get to it one night... anyways... I just wanted to say in defense of GReddy exhausts, ya gotta admit that they were the "in" thing not too long ago... so there was a time that people liked em (I still love mine)... just that tastes and preferences have shifted now... and the Frankencar... those guys are really cool, but the parts business is their side job, because they all have full-time jobs, so that explains, but isn't an excuse, the longer response time as opposed to other sellers. They do make good parts from what I've seen and I think its good value too, if you're willing to wait.

Anyways, I still agree that now Cattman is the way to go, and your car is probably the envy of many others....

I just want some of them headers... :drool1:

I also wanted to achieve a similar exhaust sound to the 350Z/ G35. I was hoping with a Cattman Y-pipe and just an aftermarket 2.5" B-pipe it would sound close to it.

i think mine sounds pretty close except its a bit more beefier, and louder. heres more info and a sound clip http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....6&page=2&pp=30

soundmike 11-25-2004 11:55 AM

Thanks again guys. I wish someone in Houston had the Frankencar catback so i could listen to it. I remember reading "good" reviews on the Powertech muffler but when i got it, it sounded terribly loud and drones quite a bit. It even reverberates throughout the cabin.

Other than a full cat-back replacement, do you think replacing the b-pipe or the muffler can offer a bit more vroom/growl over the OEM without droning and such?

frankieduxAE 11-25-2004 03:43 PM

i have the cattman headers and catback. the sound is similar to the 350z/G35c, but it gets deeper when you get on the gas.

any aftermarket catback will definitely add more growl to the exhaust note vs stock, just depends how deep/loud you want it.

i recommend cattman (headers, ypipe, or catback) for everyday use, little droning when cruising around town and it sounds awesome after 4k rpm.

I would think that one solution might be too have a 2.5" diameter b-pipe (custom, Stillen, Cattman, Warpspeed, Budget, whatever) with the stock muffler should accomplish that. You'd have to get new piping from the b-pipe to the muffler though, since ya might not be able to match the b-pipe to the stock piping very well. Anyone have any comments on this? I've heard it sounds good... only slightly louder and no drone...

i was at work the other day and i was talkin to my friends brother and he braught up a pretty good idea but im not sure if it can be done. he told me to see if they can install a 350z exhaust on the 2000 maxima se. can this be done?

Anything is possible but I would say no. It is a dual exhaust system. Unless your willing to cut into your bumper & have a welder & a master fabricator handy & tons of cash. I would say it is out of the question.
