i want to change the stock speakers out and i was wondering if that is the only way to do it? from the looks of it.. it seems like you have to ruin the stock speakers just to use the bracket... is there a bracket that can be purchased to preserve the stock speaker?
has anyone ever ordered some speakers from crutchfield because they say they do give you all the necessary accessories for a clean install. thanks

Here's what I've heard but not confirmed:

1. You can buy 6 3/4s and they will fit with no bracket.
2. The bose speakers use removable brackets which can be purchased from your dealer.

Let us know if you can confirm either of these to be true.

but wouldn't the 6 3/4s bang the window with no bracket. it doesn't look like a whole lotta depth without some kinda bracket... but im not too sure
has anyone out there tried a 6 3/4 without a bracket?

I have a set of MB Quarts that I didn't have to use the brackets with. The cos a pretty penny though!

6 3/4's don't fit

6 3/4's won't fit without a bracket, you will hit the window. This was with some Rockford Fosgate speakers. You need the bracket, but Best Buy only had a bracket for 6.5's, not the 6.75's.

What'd the brackets cost?

I had bought some rockford Fantic Q 6.5's and they wouldn't fit for anything. The widow would come down and hit it.

Bestbuy said about $15 for two brackets. I'm not sure if this is the market price for such a bracket or not. They didn't have the correct harness either, and said they would have to cut and solder the speakers. I didn't bother to ask if they would charge extra labor for this. They always say that their "basic" install is just removing and putting in screws.

If you get really low profile speakers, you may be able to mount them directly to the frame. This would work better than the plastic brackets that would probably resonate and rattle...

Installed 1 set of Kenwood 6 3/4 in the rear doors. The windows clear it. I guess cause they don't go all the way down. I only used 2 screws. Getting the jigsaw out, makin' my own brackets.

Speaker Depth

The Crutchfield catalog lists
the maximum front and rear speaker mounting
depth... and apparently the rear has more
than the front...like pinakbet said, probably
cuz the rear windows don't go all the way down.

Didn't take that many pictures of the install cause my thatch roof garage started leaking when it rained really hard yesterday.

anyway... to the pictures!

here's the before and after...
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~bryanp/6&3qu...%20bracket.jpg
Used 2 screws to hold it down. W/ hi bass, there'd be mad vibrations comin' about.

I used inch thick wood and PCI/AGP unused-slot covers for the brackets. Also used automotive/marine weatherstripping for the door and the removed panel.

while we're at it. what's this wire running along the rearseat/trunk opening? might it be the wire for the bose sub? I didn't get the C&C package.
