Problem with 20's??? HELP!

Ok, here is the deal,

I have 20" rims on my 5th gen and I just dropped it with tokico illumina suspension and vogtland springs.... problem is the SLIGHTEST bump and my rear left tire hits something hard! But it's only that tire! The other side has never ever hit!?! The offset on the rear is 20 and the front is 10 is that a problem since it's a staggered off set? I am just looking for suggestions because it's so slammed I can't even drive anywhere now....

You could try those rubber spring stops (or whatever they are called) they sell at PepBoys. It is basically a piece of rubber you place in between the coils of the rear springs to keep it from compressing to much.

NYC TAR Dec 13, 2004 02:17 PM

I remember that you have to trim little piece off the rear left fender, when people installed G35 rims.

Sorry can't marry you honey because I work too much we'd never see each other... anyways guys thanks for any ideas ya might have its just frustrating to hear it hit. I think since it's only the rear right side that something may be wrong with my axel or frame??? I may just have to put my rear stock springs back on...

Yaco_Max Dec 13, 2004 04:48 PM

I know what do you mean!

Girl I pulled your pics ...

Cool car!!!!!

JdoubleOe703 Dec 13, 2004 05:03 PM

u need to shave off a bit where the bodypanel meets the rear bumper on the inner well... it sticks out a bit and thats where the rub is... just run your hand along the fender and you will feel it...

Definately. The suspension was designed for 17s and 16s and you decided to go 3-4 inches bigger, slam it, and didn't expect problems? Funny thread. We should have a special part of the forums for all these threads lately. "I put 30 inch rims on my max, dropped it 4 inches, and it rides poor now?". "My tranny died! I only ran 150 shot of nitrous through it!"

My suggestion is to get STOCK size rims and not drop it to the ground

Mark

Great post moron. I wouldn't drop the car more than an 1.5" with 20's.

Edit: Your car looks hot, and you are beautiful.

Those offsets are wrong, should be more like 35-40mm, recheck the offsets and it may require a rolling of the rear fenders.... :smash:

Nathan Dec 13, 2004 07:16 PM

Holy, some of you sounds like immature elementary school children. Grow up!

As for your rubbing issues, you're most likely rubbing the fender where the fender curves in. Your offsets are way off. They should be no lower than 35mm's, or else you'll be asking for trouble.

I have 19's and tend to rub the rear passenger side fender much more than I do the rear drivers side. All I can suggest is getting your fenders rolled.

irish44j Dec 13, 2004 07:20 PM

OFFSET. Even with 17's you're gonna rub if the rims are a 20 and 10 offset. The max offset you can really run on the back without rubbing is MAYBE 30, but more likely about 35. How far out are those rims sticking out from the wheel wells????

Ammi Dec 13, 2004 07:40 PM

How wide are those 20s? You can't be running 20s w/ 10mm offset.

BlkShadow01 Dec 13, 2004 07:45 PM

Gettin bigger/huge rims only makes the car peform poor and doesn't even look good. I'd stick with 17's or 18's at most.

Blk2kMAXSE Dec 13, 2004 08:42 PM

i had the same problem. my problem was on the rear passenger side. tire would rub against the lip where the rear bumper is connected to the car. had to beat it in a lil. try cleaning in there really good, put some tire shine on the tires and go for a short drive. see where the tire shine rubs off to see where its rubbing.
hope this helps,
Lam

Here is the answer!!!

Get some airbags!!! Masa (don't know if you know him) had the same problem with his Lexus he dropped it with 20's and his front tires where rubbing..he got airbags instead and it solved the problem....I don't know what was rubbing....and even if airbags would help....but it would look sick to see a max with air bags....hehehehe

Blk2kMAXSE Dec 14, 2004 07:58 AM

ummmm, i have air bags..... still had the problem.

tmaculate1 Dec 14, 2004 08:35 AM

holy shiot, she is fine. i need a girl like her. :)

Maxima Girl Dec 14, 2004 04:21 PM

Thanks so much for the help. I rolled my fenders before I ever put the 20's on. I will take ya'lls suggestions and try them out tomorrow! I will let you know who's ideas worked! Thanks again for all the concern and input! -MG

02SEMAxIMA Dec 15, 2004 02:15 PM

Do you have a close up pic of the way the rims sit before the drop? Mine was on 20's for a week and everyone that seen it said it looked kind of funny. Which made no sense because the rims were stolen off the car!

Maxima Girl Dec 15, 2004 02:53 PM

The only pics I have are on my website www.cardomain.com/id/themaximagirl
Yeah they do look funny on 20's because the front sits higher and the back is low when they have stock suspension. Plus they are so high they look like they are going four-wheelin. It looks much better now that it is dropped but makes that damn noise!
