Betcha can't solve this lighting mystery!

Ok, here's the deal. My passenger-side rear brakelight is malfunctioning. Specifically, here's what's wrong:

LIGHTS OFF, TURN SIGNAL ON
-The front turn signal DOES flash
-The rear turn signal DOES NOT flash
-The clicker goes 'click-click-click' on the inside
-The instrument cluster arrow does not light

LIGHTS ON, TURN SIGNAL ON
-The front turn signal DOES NOT flash
-The front turn signal lights up
-The rear turn signal DOES NOT flash
-The clicker DOES NOT go 'click-click-click' on the inside
-The instrument cluster arrow DOES NOT light

Kudos to the genius that solves this one!!!!

Rear tail blinker os out. It's all resistance and the process of the relay reacting to the dead blinker.

How would I fix this bugger of a problem, then?

NmexMAX Jan 5, 2005 09:21 AM

Just buy a new tail blinker, check the car manual for the light part # or at some stores they have a reference catalog with part#'s, math the year/make/model and find it, pop the trunk lining, snap out the bulb, replace with new one, snap back into place, put trunk lining back together.

One way to check it the blinker is indeed out, flash the hazards and stand behind the vehicle to verify it's not working.

Yeah, I have tried the hazards, no luck there. I ahev also tried another bulb. So all I need is to get a new blinker unit?

A NEW REAR blinker might do the trick...

Alright, I hate to sound like a complete dumba$$, but where would the rear blink module be, and how would I replace it?

NmexMAX Jan 6, 2005 06:16 AM

Just change the bulb.

Could it be the relay for the turn signal? I think it goes one for the driver side and one for the passenger side. Open your hood, look in the black box on the left. The relay you need should be labeled on the underside of the cover. Actually just to make sure, switch the relay from your driver side to your passenger side. Check to see if the passenger side turn signal work. If it does, then you know what to replace.....right?

If not the bulb then the relay most likely. If you need a diagaram let me know.

Simplist & most time effective....just did this on my motorcycle, so to speak.
Swap parts to test for dead relays/bulbs.

Go get 'em sparky.

I will test this when I am done work today...just so I am prepared, how would I go about changing a dead relay?

speye022 Jan 6, 2005 10:53 AM

take out old relay (it pulls out kinda like a fuse), plug in the new one. I think they sell relays at NAPA, Autozone, Pepboys and such.

Metal Maxima Jan 6, 2005 04:09 PM

Ugh, finally found it. I did a bulb swap-out on my cluster a week ago, and the turn signal bulb came loose...that was it!

I wish I checked this before I took a ******* multimeter to all the relays :soapbox:

I would like to say, though...thanks to all those whom have provided their insight to this problem, you make this site worthing coming back to again and again!
