Couple Questions about my Auto Climate Control, and another annoying Q about HID's
 

1) On my new (to me) 2000 SE - when the Climate Control is on Auto - does the AC compressor stay on full time? (i.e., on my lexus rx 300, when you have the climate control on auto, the a/c stays on - even when it's 30 degrees out) - it seems power wise this is the case with my max - and there is no A/C light (a'la my lexus). On my lexus you just hit the a/c button and it will turn of the compressor, and keep the climate control on auto.

compressor turns on and off to maintain what temp you have set inside the cabin...put it in manual when you want just the fan and no compressor

that's not entirely true. yes the compressor does turn on and off as necessary to maintain the set temperature but putting the system on manual doesn't change that. it just allows you to change the fan speed and what vents the air blows out of. the way to turn off the compressor and just have the fan on is to use the econ mode.

If you want HID kit, check GD section

So why post?

Even if it's very cold, having the a/c running isn't necessarily a bad thing. It doesn't just cool the air. It also takes the moisture out of the air. If you have your windshield defroster on, the a/c compressor is also on (even if you have it set to output hot air, the a/c runs to dehumidify the air before it gets sent into the cabin). This is nice, because dry, hot air will defrost the windshield faster than hot air alone. Some guys over on b15sentra.net did a modification to prevent the a/c compressor from running automatically when they switched to defrost mode. They could still defrost their windows with hot air alone, but it was much slower than when they had hot dry air.

The main reason why I run my a/c in the Georgia summer is not to make it cooler in the car. It's to remove the humidity from the cabin. I can deal with feeling hot, but feeling like the air is thick and sticky with moisture bothers the heck out of me. :)

YEAH...thanks for the reply....I know that A/C takes the moisuture out of the air, and that defrost is optimal with heat on full blast plus a/c on ....but the main reason I was asking was because my SE felt slower than my GXE, and I was trying to diagnose the power differential.

From what i hear, the compressor comes on most of the time when you are in the AUTO mode to keep the cabin at that temp. I only use AUTO in the summer time (when i need A/C). In the winter time, use the ECON button b/c the compressor stays off. It still works as an "auto" button because it keeps the car at the specified temp. (The owners manual is your friend) :spin:

Your SE may actually be slower. I don't know about the 2000 models, but on the 5.5gens, the SE came with heavier wheels and seats and stuff. Your SE might just be heavier than your GXE was. You'll feel it especially if your wheels are heavier than your GXE wheels were. Having the larger, heavier rims out there will make the car feel as if it doesn't accelerate as well (because it doesn't).

I'm an SE owner, and I love it, but even I have to admit that in COMPLETELY stock form, a GXE would be faster at the strip... just a little. :)

I was just looking in the FAQs here on the org, and it turns out that having the SE 17'' wheels instead of the 16'' wheels adds enough unsprung weight to the vehicle to equal the effect of having a 275lb passenger in the car. This does NOT mean that the 17'' rims weigh a combined total of 275lbs more than the 16'' rims. It just means that the amount of extra power required to turn the bigger 17'' rims is the same amount of power that it would take to move your car if you had 275lbs of dead weight on board.

I am DEFINITELY getting lighter rims now. Not only will it help performance, but it should improve gas mileage for people who do a lot of in-town driving. Getting those heavy wheels to stop and go and stop and go all the time must be hell on gas mileage. On the highway, it shouldn't matter as much, because once those big rims start rolling, they'll keep rolling.

DAMN...how much do our 17 inch stock rims weigh? I had 18inch X 8.5 Motegi MR-7's on my GXE...I figured that the stock 17's would weigh about the same....

Oh well....

on my 5.5 i just push the econ button and it kicks the ac compressor off.
