what's the sensor in front of air filter????

hey, new to the site and I luv it!!

I have searched about the service light code (0171,0174) and I think narrowed it to the MAF which seems to be a common problem.

my question is what is the sensor that is between the air flow inlet and the air filter box?? I removed it (before seeing on this site that it was not the MAF) and it was covered in dust.

If it is the sensor I am thinking you are talking about, it is a temperature sensor.

yep should be iat sensor, intake air temp.but the maf sensor is after the filter. big circle sensor.

so if my max is having the prob with lunging (especially when it is 1st started) it is most likely the MAF???? Which is the large sensor behind the air filter box with 2 torx screws. From reading previous posts replacement is better than cleaning it???? Also I will need to have the computer reprogrammed, anything else???? How much should this run??? I am female so when they see me coming they think the word "stupid" is written across my forehead. (haha) That is why I am doing my research!!!! Thanks for any advice.....

Just some advice...before going into any Nissan service dept to ask for service to be completed on your car, do as much research on the problem as possible. Then when you walk in to the service dept, tell them straight up what you think the problem is and that you want it fixed and without them trying to fix anything else. Just be FIRM with them and you won't have any problems.

Furthermore, if your car is experiencing lunging, it is in fact, most likely a bad MAF. New MAF's run anywhere between 100-200 dollars depending on where you can find them but i would recommend having a friend of yours who is somewhat mechanically inclined perform the replacement. Replacing an MAF is a pretty simple procedure and would save you quite a bit of money over taking it to Nissan Service.

When you say computer reprogrammed, I am assuming that you mean you need to have the SES reset. Otherwise, the computer will automatically reset to the new MAF as long as you disconnect the battery (and leave it off for at least an hour), during and after the install of the new MAF.

I just bought mine for my 2000 SE from Dave B for $84 plus shipping. The dealer was gonna charge me $183 for the part!

DaveB = THE MAN..
Nismo_star = THE MAN..

These are the people you should talk to if you ever run into problems with your car. They are great knowledgable techs. Along with packetattack.
