grinding from the front brakes... what's wrong?
I've been noticing a grinding noise coming from the front wheels after say a 30 minute drive. The pads are new.
What could it be? Has anyone else had the same problem? |
warped rotors

is that a definite? Is there any thing else it could be?

Whats up bro, I am in the process of ordering some powerslots right now and was doing some research here... I just checked www.sportcompactonly.com and they are 156.98 for the fronts right now which seems really cheap to me. I think they are 199 on www.custommaxima.com...

If it's warped rotors, then you should be getting more than just a grinding sound. You should also be feeling a strange shudder/shake/shimmy when you use the brakes, especially when you're trying to slow down from high speed.

i agree... your brakes would feel like a** on the highway. if you are not getting a vibration i am going to say that the rotors are not warped. i would say to replace the pads and rotors at the same time anyway.... i will be going with powerslot myself... |
If your not feeling vibration, and shimmy from your steering, then you dont have warped rotors. I am aware that the 5th gen has the warping problem but I dont think this is the case here. Check your pads first, see if they are worn to the metal. Do you see any pitting or irregular rotor wear. If you do then you have messed up your rotors, and need to change them.
You might also want to try and see if you have any thing stuck in between the dust shield. That might be causing the problem. |
thanks for all the feedback. I don't have any vibration from the brakes so it may not be warped then. As far as the pads go, I just installed new Bosch pads, again in the front, a couple months ago. I am going to check if there is anything stuck in the dust shield.
What is it exactly that I'm looking for when trying to see any pitting or irregular rotor wear? |
i just did my install on the front brakes powerslot rotors and hawk pads and the combo is great!!
|
Try putting some of that "disk brake quiet" lube stuff on the backs of the pads.
|
there's a metal shield behind the rotor that might be causing the noise. i noticed a similar noise on my max after changing the rotors... i simply bent the shield away from the rotor to give it some more clearance & problem was solved.
also make sure the rotor is flush w/ the hub... make sure no debris or spaces between the hub & rotor |

If it doesnt seem smooth, cracks. It should be smooth. |
