Anyone's Leather Steerig wheel peeling?

My steering wheel is peeling on only one section. I wonder if I can get it replaced under warranty.

Anyone else have this issue?

If it was balck it would be no big deal but mine is dark brown and it looks bad.

spirilis May 5, 2005 11:55 AM

Mine's starting to fade, I'm going to try putting some leather conditioner on it soon and see how it looks.

2k2MerlotSE May 5, 2005 12:16 PM

mine starting to fade on the top of the wheel. I was going to look into getting one modded to look like the one that comes with the porsche. It titanium I think. It would compliment the door handels and shift nob very nicely.

Mine has. My dealer says they can't replace it because it is not covered under my extended warranty.

Y2KSilvahSE May 5, 2005 01:03 PM

Yea, I am getting slight peeling right at the 9 oclock and 3 oclock locations where my hand usually holds the steering wheel. I doubt they'd cover that, especially on my 5 yr old max... It's not very noticable tho, you really have to be looking for it to see anything. Probly normal wear and tear. :gotme:

TenetMusic May 5, 2005 01:10 PM

my dads altima is doing that bad kinda sucks for him. he is always trying to drive my max! too bad dad

XGaSpAcHo May 5, 2005 02:02 PM

He has a 2k2-2k3 wheel doesn't he? I believe they are slightly different than the 00-01. I could be wrong about that though.

yeah but the guy that started the thread has an 02

TheBigDu May 6, 2005 08:04 AM

Hey guys!

Thanks for the plug, Jay. I do still have that wheel for sale. Unfortunately, the for-sale thread is so old that it got deleted by the system. It's a 2k2 HEATED steering wheel with no airbag (but you can swap with your current one) or audio controls (again, you can swap). It's in almost perfect condition. I have many pics of the wheel and of the few small blemishes. Also, I have the heated steering switch, airbag removal instructions, and wheel removal instructions. I'm not sure which years it will fit, but the guy I bought it from had it on his '97 and told me it will fit any 4.5-5.5 gen Max. If you're interested, I'll post some pics here, and you can make me an offer if you like what you see.

I just installed the one I bought off TheBigDu took me about 10 minutes. The hardest part is probably gonna be finding a tamper-proof torqux driver to remove the airbag from the wheel. Lucky for me I happen to have one in my tool kit for work. The removal is really only 3 bolt/screws and one nut.

Y2KSilvahSE Jun 10, 2005 01:14 PM

My 00's wheel is not as bad as you guys are sayin...sounds like an 02 - 03 issue...

mobyms2 Jun 10, 2005 01:41 PM

Well I think a big part of the problem down south... or at least here in Houston, is that it gets very hot and the humidity is pretty much year round. Plus with the bodies natural skin oils and any bit of sweat or grime you may get on your hands gets on the steering wheel. The combination really puts a beating on the wheel since your hands are constantly in the same spots. Me? I've a 2000 SE that I bought in the fall of '99 and come fall, winter, spring, and some of summer I normally have my sunroof open and my windows partially open. Now combine it all and i'm almost surprised the wheels lasted in such good condition for so long =D

Hey Regime, how much did thebigdu sell you the steering wheel for? It'll at least give me an idea of cost.

maxitech Jun 10, 2005 08:53 PM

wheelskins.com sells some quality leather wraps

I love it. No more horrible looking scrapped up steering wheel. :wiggle:
Haven't hooked up the heater element yet but I will someday soon.
Anyway thanks for sending that out so fast, you bubblewrapped the crap out of that thing, took forever to get it all off. haha

Hey, no problem! I know I went a little overboard with the taping and bubblewrap, but I wanted it to be secure in there. Then again, what the hell is going to happen to a steering wheel? :gotme:

Glad it worked out for you and that you were able to do the airbag transfer without any problems. Enjoy!

BlackBIRDVQ Jun 11, 2005 09:07 AM

I have a 02 wheel on my 01, its not heated and it works just fine- this if for guys who wanna get newer steering wheels to repleace their damaged leather.

I did the 02 SE wheel due to the leather ! My 01 GXE came with this thick plastic/vinyl wheel and after 100K miles it just looked bad, so a friend of mine gave me his 02 wheel that was in mint shape- he bought new airbags for his 02 and it came with the steering wheel.

00 Wheel uses a diff airbag and cruise controll system is also different, its very similar to a 97-up 4th gen Maxima steering wheel.

01-03 steering wheels are swappable.

Why are you wearing your wife's ring? :bowrofl:

Regime Jun 11, 2005 01:45 PM

The airbag transferred over fine, just bolted it all up.

nirvana4all Jun 13, 2005 06:57 AM

ahh, florida is horrible with the leather steering wheels...my 03 is already looking worn.

ICULookN Jun 13, 2005 11:39 AM

I just ordered a black/sand cover from wheelskins.

DAP Jun 13, 2005 12:30 PM

Mine isn't fading or peeling but the stitching is frayed in some places. I have one of those heat shields for the winshield which keeps a lot of heat off of it.

Nomad Jun 13, 2005 01:10 PM

BIGDU let see some pics of your wheel. nomad_glacier@mail.ru
