oil catch can and 3.5 ping / knock

Regardless, I haven't noticed any improvements with my pinging problem. Maybe I need to give it some more time. Should I run some sea foam through the system to clean out the IM?
Yeah, give it some time. Mine did not immediately go away.

I am not inclined to open the hood every 2 weeks to drain it becoz if I do forget inadvertently and the engine could overheat/explode since the high pressure in the engine won't be relieved via the PCV valve.

I think if you're installing the separator that is sold at Home Depot and Lowes then the checking and emptying of the oil is going to be more frequent. This is due to the fact that the container that holds the oil is considerably smaller than the actual catch cans designed for your vehicle. It probably requires a peek everytime you fill up your gas tank. I have yet to empty mine.

Solution to 02/03 Maxima engine ping at 2000rpm
Guys...the problem that causes the ping under load really lies with fuel delivery and carbon buildup in cylinders. To fix these problems you need to replace your in-tank fuel filter every two years/40,000km(cost is $8.90). I know that Nissan says that it's a lifetime filter because of it's location in the gas tank and the filter is built into the fuel pump, but the filter itself is made with regular paper that develops sediment/gunk buildup as the mileage rolls on and therefore there is a slight slow down of fuel delivery to the engine under load with light acceleration(2000rpm). This causes a lean fuel mixture in the cylinders and the pinging starts. Under heavier throttle, the fuel pump kicks up the pressure and sends more fuel, so therefore no pinging. To keep the cylinders carbon-free, use seafoam motor treatment every 5000km. Carbon buildup contributes to engine ping under loads.

My car is almost 6 years old, has 105k and doesn't ping / knock and is on the original FF.

WOW...A VQ35DE that doesn't ping...You've got a one in a million there buddy...either that or you're deaf as a post...or maybe you drive like a leadfoot...Even NISSAN..the manufacturer, said to expect pinging under loads(page 9-4 of owner's manual).

Ok, your point ...
I sense a challenge here ....
It's not like I don't have both the FSM and Owners manual memorized or anything... no...not me, and I really have not owned 2 VQ's either.... ever..
Oh, and I'm not your 'buddy', mmmkay?
My high CR VQ (10.3:1) has yet to ping.
And 1 more thing, had you been familiar with Nissan FSM's, you would know that they are prone to errors, we, here on the org. have found many. And we all know that an FSM > Owners Manual.
