This is going to be a custom fabriaction if you are going to do this otherwise. Our cars only have a 2-din slot availible. Most monitors are double-din, so your only other option is to put the monitor in the center console and put the HU in the arm rest. Either way it's MUCH cheaper.

$120 - Microvision Screen
$300 - Alpine 9833
$100 - Raw Materials
$100 - DVD Player
-------------------------
~$600 TOTAL COST

instil Aug 1, 2005 05:46 AM

whats gonna cost me is a navigation unit. I could do without the dvd, but i want the navigation. Then i can get the microvision and fabricate something to mount everything flush. Im looking around to see if this will be cheaper or worth it,rather than an eclipse.
Secondly, you have too many projects going on at once judging by that list you have.

Well, that's impossible. All modern navigation units obtain their geographics from DVDs, hance why most navi units are also DVD players. Moreover, I would recommend the Eclipse any day of the week due to their established reputation as one of the forerunners in quality HUs. Basically, you will not find a double-din navi unit under $1500. If you are tight on money, than you could get the Kenwood unit now, then get the brain later...although together you will wind up spending just as much as the eclipse.

Pioneer just came out with a new Double Din HU that has navi built in for under $1500.

the pioneer is pretty neat but it cost too much for my tastes. Wow navi is so damn expensive.

rmh3093 Aug 1, 2005 01:23 PM

Pioneer is the ****! they make the best products in my opinion

Morgan06 Aug 1, 2005 01:42 PM

carputer? thats the only solution for a broke mugger's navigation.

pda and gps? get that done for pretty cheap too i bet, and keep your stock radio.

mp3car.com

Whether i got the pioneer or eclipse, getting rid of my weak Bose HU would just be an added bonus.

People have PDA's mounted by their headunit? Ive never seen that in picture or in person.

Check Irish's webpage, I think he has had this setup before (or still does).

I highly second this as the best option for someone with a tight budget. go to mp3car.com and read up on every sticky they have. I got two 5' lcd screens in my visors hooked up to a computer that is mounted in the trunk. Total cost me about $500. $300 for a cheap computer and $200 lcd screens from my visit to China. and spend $70 on a usb gps system that plugs into the computer. You should realize that this is a highly involved process and is very time consuming, but you also feel really good after you have finished this project.

yay! expensive 'underground' equipment with silly names. paying $400 for 6.5" components that the human ear can barely distinguish the difference between is soooo sweet. but i concur, pioneer is butt sex with hairy pirate booty- even if it says 'premier' on it.

carputer. im sure okay can attest to this as well. but building a computer is easy. getting a nice shell GUI to run with some big icons or menus is easy. getting it done cheap is easy. but making it simple and practical is the problem. without a touchscreen overlay or some custom glass work and touchpad/trackball it will just be pure herbery. how sweet could a carputer be with a keyboard and mouse stuffed under a seat? plus youve got to factor in startup/shutdown controllers, 12v converter, etc.

just look around for deals on ebay and such. I got my pioneer in-dash dvd player w/ 7inch monitor from a friend for $350.

meccanoble Aug 1, 2005 05:03 PM

as a navi, eclipse is just plain the best. The convenience is unreal. Not even going into the audio area of how the eclipse is better, i hear that u cant even use the pioneer while moving because of the way its set up. Something about ground and parking brake. What kind of BS is that. I like pioneer cause of the cosmetics/wallpaper/design but the better engine goes to eclipse 4 sure.

I'm sorry that you cannot distinguish the difference. I guess that's what separates we audiophiles from the rest, which I am more than happy to settle for. :)

I guess I'll have to settle for my "crap-a$$" Arc Audio amp and components, Adire Koda sub, and Rainbow coaxes all wrapped and contained within a field of Second Skin. I'm sure the wonderful audio equipment availible on such regal online vendors such as mp3car.com would work just as well, but then again what do I know?

word, once i saw one i was sold on it. I heard about the dvd not working while you drive with the pioneer also. Now that the days of fumbling with a portable CD player wit the cassette adapter are gone,i need some new state of the art technology to distract me. A touch screen and DVD's playing should do the job.

You're both right. The newer models are equipped with a gyroscope that cannot be bypassed. Older the N-1 can play dvds while hrdiding whereas the N2 cannot.
