Busted VIAS? Torque Converter? Dammit...what's wrong with my car?

Well, today is the first time I can say that there is something seriously wrong with my car. 50k miles on the ticker and all I've had to show for it was a busted secondary O2 sensor. But today, while I was driving I noticed a lack of grunt initially. Then when I ht the highway, I floored it and the car shifted on the spot, gave me a good dose of shift shock, but...it wouldnt accel. for sh*t past 4K RPM. The needle was barely moving up. Its not my MAF because the low-end seems all dandy and revs past 3-4RPM just fine (it redlines, even). But when Im in highway speeds, its downright dead past 4K RPM.

I knew another person with this problem and he had his torque converter and transmission replaced. And if it were the VIAS, I would feel a loss of power throughout all gears, correct?

Dammit...just dammit. Help!

Edit: By the way, everything was just fine with the car yesterday, as far as I remember.

From what I heard, the VIAS only affects power up top (5k+ rpm).

Well it's certainly weird. I just did a quick jolt from 60-80 and it only took the car ~4 seconds to hit 80. So now, everything's fine. Off the line, the car stills pull hard as hell...

Now what's weird is that when I did the 60-80 test, I paid attention to the RPM needle and it still wasn't moving...it was just barely creeping. It'll shoot past 3K and then just crawl once it's past 4.

I dunno. This is very weird.

Please read that again and asses the logistics of that comment. :flame:

I'm confused. I said 60-80, not 0-80. I could've counted wrong, but it felt identical to how it always accelerated to that point.

ANYWAY.... check out your cat. I had the same thing, thought it was the tranny, went through a bunch of junk and found out I had a fried kitty! Another thing: You didn't happen to get the bright idea of removing the air hose from the intake to the valve cover and capping the intake end and slapping a filter on the other end, did you? Just curious because that's how I ended up with the same crap.

Hate to say it but your MAF is NOT ok. It's a common problem with 00-01 cars, our mafs just start to suck over time.

4k is where the maf starts to choke. get a 2Y001 or AD210 maf and your problem will go away.

Nah, the intake is installed just right and I never touched it once I had MacAlert install it for me. I guess I'll have to check out the cats, if it's fried...well I have a warranty to cover it.

Edit: Hahaha, Metal. :p

You see. This is where I'll debate you, because like I said, my car pulls like an f-ing champ through the first 2 gears. Nothing can stop it, it's just when it downshifts into 3rd gear it felt so dead.

THAT problem is your MAF.

NYPD-Arnold Oct 3, 2005 07:30 AM

Again, when your MAF is dead you will not be able to accelerate through 4K RPM through ALL gears. This just happens in 3rd and 4th.

that is true when it is operating. if it breaks, then there is no telling what position it stopped in. reduced low end power could mean the rod is stuck in the open position like it would be above 5k. the reverse is true in feeling decreased top end pulled that it broke with the rod in the closed position. SR and i have on a better fix than the jb weld but going to dyno soon to confirm that is working.

Any engine/performance issues with capping off the ventilation system? Where did you put your breather cap.
