HID's & Turn Signals on 2k

I searched all over, but I don't think too many people have HID's in there 2000-2001 max that are not a plug and play kit.

Every time I turn my left or right turn signal on, my HID's flicker???
I have D2R Osram bulbs 4800k fabricated into the factory halogen reflector housing, and Mitsubishi Electric ballasts. the ballasts are wired directly into the old halogen wiring.
I am guessing that the 00-01 wiring harness may be the problem, but wanted to know if anybody else has any suggestions, comments or experience before I go spend $50 & time installing a 02-03 wiring harness?
Thanks in advance.

check your grounds.....

are you saying you didn't use an 02-03 harness? I'm not sure if it's possible to do it that way correctly :gotme:

I used one, and it was easy and everything works correctly

He doesn't have the 5.5 housing. He just has the kit in the stock 5th gen housing. I do to. Every now and then my HIDs flash when I hit the turn signal stalk. I haven't had any other problems however. I just figure it's a weak ballast.

Don't use the factory ground for the turn signals from the headlight harness. You need to use the body ground from the car for turn signals. That is how have mine installed.

It is not a HID kit, it is just bulbs fabricated into the housing, and the ballasts hooked up to them. The the power for the ballast is comming from a splice into the old halogen harness, and the ground is to a body bolt (bolt holding battery down on drivers side, & mount for the horn on the passenger side).

-So maybe it is something with the grounding of the ballasts?
-I just thought maybe the 2002-2003 harness eliminated some connection to the turn signal somewhere??

I have an '03 SE that I added HID fog on to and I had a similar problem that when i turned on my blinker they flickered. The problem was that the fuse which was a 15 needed to be switched to a 20 and that fixed the problem right away.

dafertilizer Dec 27, 2005 05:39 PM

which fuse was it?

I'd imagine it was the headlamp fuse.

-Ok changed the headlamp fuses to 20's , and regrounded both of the ballasts to the chassis, and the HID's still flicker when I hit the turn signal.

-Also noticed another problem with the front passenger side turn signal. When the signal is activated, it does not stay on while the brighter filament flashes, the lower running light filament itself just flashes on and off???? very strange. I checked all the fuses, and changed the bulb twice???

If I can understand correctly what your trying to remedy, like I said before, the way the '00-'01 headlight harness is wired up, is that they all share the same power and ground--the turn signal (both filaments), high beam and low beam (halogens). You need to break that ground from the turn signal and wire it to body ground. I guarantee that will stop your bulbs (D2R) from blinking. Believe me, that's about the only way to get around it. Wiring the ballast ground somewhere else isn't going to do anything, because the turn signal bulb itself is still wired to the harness. Again, they are still all sharing the same power and ground. Just break the ground from the turn signal (cut the black wire from the turn signal harness) and wire it somewhere else, preferably body ground. :)

Just tried that, and the lights are still flickering, and the passenger turn signal is still only using the low filament.
It's like the flasher is drawing to much power at the initial switch on, and that power draw is causing the HID's to flicker, you think I should try going to a 25A fuse?

dafertilizer Jan 6, 2006 06:45 AM

and the turn siganl is still only using the low fialment

Bad ballast may be throwing the whole electrical off?

dafertilizer Jan 6, 2006 09:03 AM

well one ballast blew the other day, and that is going to be replaced today, but it's even doing it with just the one ballast in there.

Mr. Blue Sky Jan 6, 2006 10:59 AM

it seems kind of scary to me to just go up in amps for a fuse like that. the thing you need to watch out for is that the stock headlight wiring can handle the 20 amp load before burning. When I did my HID setup in my 1986 2nd gen I kept all of the amp fuses the same rating (10 amps each headlight). So far my fuses haven't burned out yet. Btw I am using the stock headlight wiring and HIDs from an infinity

dafertilizer Jan 6, 2006 01:48 PM

ok then I'll stick with the 20's I think I am gonna try regrounding all the wires again.
But what about the turn signal, what could be causing that?

Mr. Blue Sky Jan 6, 2006 02:56 PM

it might be what everyone else has said. reground the headlights using a different ground wire to the body. hopefully this will insure that they are each totally isolated from one another (2 different circuits) Seems to me that the blinkers and the HID are still on the same circuit. IF that doesn't work, I am stumped

StL I30 Jan 6, 2006 03:06 PM

I'd try adding a relay and try powering the lights directly from the battery, rather than the factory harness.
