"Reprogramming ECM"

I took my car to the dealer with problems. As suspected BOTH my MAF and #1 coil were bad. (BTW does anyone have the cylinder number pattern so that I know which one's bad when I store the old set away?) I'm doing all of the repairs ext. But it said in the price that ecm re-programming was included. What exactlly would they do? And do you have to have this done after new coils and maf are installed?

what does the dealer charge to flash the ECM

irish44j 02-15-2006 06:44 PM

WHY WHY WHY are you replacing all of your coils when only 1 is bad??? WHY!!!!>>>????? If your dealer is telling you you need to replace all 6, THEY ARE SCAMMING YOU.

#1 coil is the one on the back of the engine, passenger side, IIRC.

read this thread: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=451830

then call DAVEB and get ONE new coil to replace the bad one. If another one goes bad, replace it, and so on. No need to do all 6 unless you LIKE to burn money...

They're no more than $70 apiece from Dave....its an easy DIY

its my decision man, it would be about 290 and i do have 80k on the clock. The consensus of people on the forum have said its not a bad idea to change all six at once though? You are obviously experienced and you dont think there is a need for it at this point?

And i dont know their price because it was only a total... I would like to know to. But getting it reprogramd is something I need to do then? And i couldnt do it right?

it's a 10mm bolt and a flat head screwdriver to remove it. For a price, call dave burnette 1-888-254-6060. Reprogramming is probably not necessary, and probably wont do much.

My car has 95K on it...I just now replaced one coil for the first time. Replacing all 6 will not improve things any more than replacing just one. Whoever is giving this "consensus" is just wrong, IMO. They must be trying to justify the fact that they gave the dealer $350-500 of their money to replace all 6 when they didn't need to

Here's an analogy:
You have 4 perfectly good wheels/tires on your car - but your right front wheel needs to be re-balanced. All you would do is go in and get the one wheel rebalanced - you wouldn't get all 4 of them done.

You can spend $55 and replace one, and then replace others IF they fail (which they may or may not) - or you can listen to the "consensus" and waste your money. If you're in a money-wasting mood though, feel free to paypal some to me. I'll use it constructively.

by the way, it would be helpful to us if you would look at your coils and see if they have the "gray dot" on them....

JaKillz2 02-15-2006 07:28 PM

I think now Ill only change the #1 coil. I had a question about your testing writeup though. I've used a multimeter but I dont really understand how you tell which ones are bad and which are good. And I don't get where the + and - numbers come from. SORRY to be a pain in the *** man, I do appreciate you helpin out a noob though. Oh ya, since my MAF is bad too, will I usually be able to tell if I have a bad coil just but sound or symptoms?

all six are rockin the gray dot... what does that mean?

it means that those aren't your original coils, they are the "updated" coils retrofitted to your car at some point in time.

did you read the whole writeup on how to test the coils? Basically, make a "chart" and find the coil that is messed up.....

do you have an SES light on???

I believe that if your current MAF is original and an updated version of the MAF is installed, they may need to reprogram the ECU.

no my SES light isnt on

just ordered a coil from dave b, awesome guy BTW and having my local shop (friend) order the MAF because supposedly you need vin's and stuff which would acount for the manufacturer date and all that good stuff. So we'll see. I don't think I'm going to have the dealer flash the ecm either, no real point except codes right?
