Help! My trunk won't close!

Today I popped the trunk via remote like always, throw in my bag, and the trunk won't close!??? I then spent 30min cleaning all the surrounding areas od snow and ice, and still nothing. If I was to let it drop down, it will bounce back up. If I put it down and press, nothing happens. The latch on the trunk itself seems fine, and the trunk popping mechanism works as well. Anyone what the problem could be?

the trunk is held up by some tension rods on the roof of the trunk, running across the car. check to make sure something isn't jammed up in there and stopping them from moving...

there is a lock that keeps the trunk closed. you probably bumped it with your bag and its in the closed position preventing the trunk from closing

You are talking about that latch on the bottom? If up it locks the trunk? I made sure first thing that it was in the down position.

Lock de-icer in the lock and the latch mech...

It is getting cold round here... Prob frozen up/slow moving and not latching.

That's the valet switch...shouldn't affect the latching/closing of the trunk.

I have had this happen before at the car wash. I was slaming trunk to get water from behind the license plate. (I know stoooopid) Now I cover the patech with a towl and close it a few time to get rid of the extar water.
All you have to do is losen the 2 bolts on the bottom part of the trunk latch and move the bottom latch up (towards you) a little bit and retighten.
Test closeing the trunk. It gets pusged down over time from closing the trunk and will not latch sometimes. If that does not work do the same to the top part of the trunk where the latch is. You are just adjusting them to make them connect together.
I think the bolt size is a 9 or 10 MM. Just losten adjust and retighten.
Wa-la all fixed. Also, if you wrap a little electrical tape around the bottom hook "n" you will not hear the "clank' when the trunk closes and it will not rattle either.

Thanks Time2go, I tried your idea to no avail. I dropped by my local body shop, and they said the top latch was loose and not catching, problem solved. Thanks for all the ideas though!

is there anything i can do to get the tension increased on my trunk door? basically i had dynamat installed on my trunk roof and my trunk doesnt pop up like it used to?.......sorry to thread hijack

Time2go! Feb 21, 2007 04:56 AM

Yeah remove the Dynamat and have yor car left weights...lol (Just kidding)
Sorry, I do not think you can adjust the spring rate of the trunk springs. My car does the same thing.

have any of you with these trunk problems had the problem of having that entire assembly come clean off? I'm not exactly sure where it is supposed to be screwed in by (on the bottom). But that whole piece is just moving around on its own and obviously won't let the top part (which is quite securely in place) lock into it.

ChrisMan287 Feb 11, 2011 07:57 AM

Holy random noobie post el oh el.

Satin95Max Feb 11, 2011 08:01 AM

I've had this car for 7 years and it's never done this before. And noobie? Not really..I've had other names on here back in the day but as I move the email address changes and I forget the names.

The trunk not being able to close in New Hampshire in the middle of the winter is quite a large problem.

phatboislim Feb 11, 2011 08:06 AM

did you take apart whereever, what you are talking about is moving around. it should be evident where it used to be if its a 95...even at that..you should still be able to tell where it used to be/should be placed

Satin95Max Feb 11, 2011 08:09 AM

I can see where it SHOULD be placed and there are screws in the assembly itself, but for the life of me there's on one little screw-hole on the far side. I feel like some construction strength vel-cro would do the trick..but I'm also hesitant to take a drill to the back of the car like that.

phatboislim Feb 11, 2011 08:19 AM

pics of what you're speaking about may help...aside from pics...just bolt it back up to where it should be, and if you feel you need adhesive, use it to secure it

Satin95Max Feb 11, 2011 08:29 AM

Now that I look a little closer with a hanging light, there are some very old screw holes haha..It seems as though this thing has been on its way out for a while now. When I line it up there are marks from where it used to sit, so I'll hold it there and drill holes through and put screws to hold it in place. Thanks for the help.
