SEL Gone...Can I Pass Emissions

Hi,

Strangely, my SES vanished again on its own without any intervention.

Can I rush the car to the inspection station...? Will it pass the emissions test (PA)?

I plan to buy and replace the gas cap tomorrow.

thanks - MN

it doesnt matter if the light is on...it matters if there is a code (the code is still there even if the light goes off). you have to reset it to get rid of the code. if you dont do that, you will fail when they check for codes.

my advice...fix the problem THEN go get the inspection.

Soonerfan,

thanks for your sage advice...I know I would have to fix the problem.

I have the two errant codes -- P0455 & P1448. Indications from these board indicate that it is a goose-chase - and sometimes difficult to fix. I am ready to order the vent control valve from DaveB, but I am not sure if these would solve the problem. Some folks changed both the valve and the canister and the problem still remains and the lights come back after a while.

In the meantime, anytime I park this car without the stickers, i risk getting a ticket. already, I got a $40 one the other day. The car is otherwise ok to pass mechanically..So, I am thinking of:

- reset the code to clear it, then drive it for the inspection. Once it passed, I would then spend the time to fix the problem without risking further tickets while looking for the solution...

does that clear it a bit?

If there's no light, I don't think there's a problem in passing the test.

In any case they can't run a test immediately after a reset because their emmisions computer will not get any data from the ECM until the ECM goes through its 2 trip learning routine.

But ultimately I agree that the problem should be fixed before the test.

How or where do I contact DaveB to buy these parts...
These items are expensive at the stealership...
Evaporation Canister is $199.67.
Vent Control Valve is $126.73.

Thanks...

Codes are stored in the ECU...

You have to drive for usually at least 30 min WITHOUT the light for you to be able to pass a test (allows all test to run).

If has been off for that long... Go get that test!

Upstate, thanks for the suggestion,

so the plan is:

-- disconnect the neg and positive batteries (i read it from the FAQ)
-- reconnect the battery after 24hrs (this might seem dumb..but will the car run after reconnecting the battery....I hope reconnecting will not drain it)
-- drive the car around for about one hour
-- take the test

is that about right -- MN

most states require that codes be read during an emission test. no light does not equal no codes (as I said above)

even if you dont pass right away,.. with a fail cant you get a TEMP pass thats good for 30 days give or take and then worry about it during that time frame and then those 40$ tickets can go to the cost of fixing the problem??,.. i guess all states are different but idk... g/l

You're talking about readiness codes that must be read for a valid test to confirm the ECM has not recently been reset.

No CEL = no DTC error = no problem.

Are you sure about that? I have a lazy O2 sensor (B2S2) and I passed the IL emissions inspection after the SES light cycled off. The IL test only entails hooking up an OBDII code reader. There were no codes. I'm good for two years.
