can you turn rotors that have "Hot Spots"

I just got my brakes done at Just Brakes (I know that was a bad place to go) but they told me I need to get this and this and that. The main thing I saw was that the front brakes were worn and the rear were ok but for 10 bucks more (99.88) I could get the rear ones done. They were able to turn the rear rotors but the said the front ones had Hot Spots on it (a few little spots to wear it looks like it is worn). Can they turn these? The guy told me that he can't b/c it would tear up his machine. I feel he lied his butt off b/c he didn't want to do it. Please fill me in on what should have been done and what brakes I should use the next time as well as the rotors (it's not a performance maxima just a plain 02 SE). Thank you.

Oh there was plenty of life on the rotors (there weren't thin) and they wanted to charge $722.

WAIT....$722? like seven hundred and twenty two dollars to turn the front rotors? If so read below:

1. Go back there and kick them in the head for me (kthxbye)
2. If anything just look in the group deal for brembo blanks and maybe some hawk HPS pads...or even axis pads.
3. Then when you do end up buying the new pads ands stuff...go intall it somewhere reputable or DIY.
4. Go back to the "Just Brakes" place and throw the old front rotors at the brake guy's head..pick up the rotors throw them into the machine..and kick the guy int he head, once again, for good measure.

That place is retarded...stick to brembo blanks and Hawk HPS pads :) OH YEAH...and dont go there anymore.

If a rotor has hot spots, it hardens those spots because of the excessive heat. The hot spots will be colored. It will wear out the blades on the lathe much faster if they turn hardened rotors, so he wasn't lying to you. Hardened rotors will cause vibration when you press the brakes on the freeway. Depending on how deep the hot spots are, turning them may not get rid of them completely anyways. You'll probably want to get new front rotors if both of them have hot spots on.

If you know how to do it yourself, you'll easily save a couple hundred dollars or more.

:werd:

Rotors aren't that expensive anyway. And it's literally 4 bolts to change them out.

Damn man for under $500 You can get brand new rotors and pads all around plus upgrade front to 6th gen hardware

wyche89 05-01-2007 06:28 PM

if he wouldn't turn the rotors for you then what was he gonna charge you $722 for??!! thats freakin insanity!! i say you go back, get a written estimate and report those bastards to the BBB.. it gets under my skin when mechanics try to to overcharge you

DOHCtorJT 05-01-2007 06:39 PM

That price is insane. I would honestly go back and get a written estimate. Take that estimate straight to the BBB. Visit another brake shop and get an estimate as well. Also call your local news station and see if they are interested in exposing a scam.

Rotors and pads alone are way less than $220 after tax if you know where to shop. Labor should be an hour for all 4 corners. At most a shop shouldn't charge more than $400 out the door for that service. Even that is high!

imported_black_tl 05-01-2007 08:51 PM

It was 722.00 for new rotors and new pads and removing the old brake fluid and installing new fluid and that is why I got the cheap stuff and will get the Hawk and Brembo combo later.

DOHCtorJT 05-01-2007 10:42 PM

Still that price is outrageous. You're not talking canadian dollars right? :)
