01 Cruise Control

Cruise control worked great a few weeks ago, no issues at all. I get on the highway and try to set cruise, but it would not set it, the light on the dash does not come on either. Could this be a button issue? or relay? I checked the fuses and none of them were blown? Any thoughts? Thanks!

This is a stupid question, but it's good to cover this stuff early on.

Are you sure you have the master switch turned on?

Does the CRUISE light come on, but not the SET or it it a case of no lights?

There is a diagnostic chart in the service manual, section EL page 202 in the link below:

Yes, the cruise light comes on, but the set light does not come on, nor does the relay click when I push the set switch.

There is a hold relay on the 4th gen cruise but not on the 5th gen cruise, so I'm not sure what is making the click. I can't recall hearing a click on my car, I'll have to go drive it and listen closely when I set the cruise.

What you can check is the cruise disconnect switch on the brake pedal and clutch pedal if you have manual trans. There is a plastic bumper that operates the switch. These bumpers do get hard with age and fall out and the cruise control controller thinks the pedal is being stepped on. There are 2 switches on the brake pedal, one for the brake lights and one for the cruise control. Check all the bumpers while you are down there.

Will do this when I get home, I remembered I had replaced the brake bumper because my brake lights stayed on all the time. Didn't even think of this! Thank you!

I just repaired my '97 Maxima cruise control brake switch. Thought it was going to be a major deal to fix. Saw the suggestion in the forum to check the brake switch and use a dime—it worked.

I just made a YouTube video that may help others. It's an easy fix/hack to do.
