A few Q's on exhaust
Ok I was going to go with the Megan Racing catback, but it seems no one has one. Its getting cold very quick here in MN. So, I think I am just going to buy a muffler and have a new exhaust system made to replace the stock cat-back much like the Megan Racing would.
With that being said, I did some searching. Looks like I'll want to go with a muffler that's 2.5" in. I think I am set with wanting a flowmaster muffler. Now, all of the posts, and all of the clips I looked at, just say "flowmaster 40 series". I am going to assume the cassic 40 series? I'd like to have 2 tips like the stock muffler has. Will the size on the "out" side of the muffler interfere with the opening in the bumper? Thanks for any help you can provide! |
I have a flowmaster 40 series on mine, it does the job. I got it on here and I'm the 3rd owner of it. You'll be happy overall with it.

Whats the ID of each of the holes on that?

Umm i would have to go measure to give u a true answer but im gonna guess 2 or 2.5 each. They are magnaflow tips and fit very well on my 01...

Here is what I think I am giong to go with...
Tips... http://store.summitracing.com/partde...art=sum-690052 Muff... http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku |
I thought you lose power if you put an exhaust on...I want some sound too but i don't want to lose power or MPG...I don't want to change the piping...Just the muffler...Do i have no options???

Personlly I think it's kind of ricey to just weld on a rear peice for sound... I mean really if someone is like " yo man what type of exhaust do you got?" and you say "Oh just a rear muffler from whoever" they may give you a :goofy: kinda look. |

Go to a custom exhaust shop and just buy a rear peice then. They'll just weld it on your stock exhaust. I havnt ever heard of anyone lossing power from installing a full catback exhaust though. The point of catback is to create a free flowing exhaust system. It helps the car flow better helping it produce more power.

Also i have no problem getting a full cat-back but what's a safe and quiet bet 2 1/2 or 3"??? I also know i have the word quiet in there but i just want a little something ya know, I think it sound so sexy when a car comes up and you hear and nice quiet deep vrroomm....I want that....:D |

I remember reading somewhere back that the stock exhaust is VCM (variable capacity muffler) and that N/A cars need back pressure which our's gives us and it opens up at high end to allow more flow or something please correct me on this if i'm wrong...

With just a Cat-back, you will not lose or gain any power, it's only for sound. |
If you're looking for a Megan B-pipe, I know where to get one.

It has to do with exhaust velocity, not back-pressure...

I think Cattman proved you can go up to 3" and actually gain power across the rev band. Alot of smaller engines use 2.5" and gain power so it would stand to reason that a larger engine would need larger piping to gain HP.
There is also a reason Brian dumped his plans for a 3" Cat-Back for the 5th gen... Or at least they are STILL not in production. When you say that he gained power across the power band, are we talking 1-2whp? because if we are, that's a joke. |

What were the other mods? IIRC the only person that had Brians 3" cat-back was F/I.

See this first - http://forums.maxima.org/dyno-discus...maxima-se.html Then this - http://forums.maxima.org/dyno-discus...44-ft-lbs.html IIRC, and I'm sure someone will chime in that can confirm this, but I believe Brian is in the process of or has already started production for his 3" catback. I wonder if there is any power to be had from a 3" system with no other performance mods or if you would actually lose power w/o supporting mods, specifically headers. |
all of the minimal gains (1-2whp) from the catback come from the b-pipe (eliminating the stock pipe's "kink").
Since you can't get a F/C catback anymore, i would go directly to cattman..... |

This should catch you up. :)

Looks like they were run on two different dyno's... If they were the #'s don't matter. Like I said before, the cat-back is for sound. An extra .5" in the cat-back IS NOT going to add 10whp on a Maxima. Going from stock to a Cattman 2.5" cat-back was no power gain, and going from a 2.5" Cattman to a 3" Cattman will be the same, except the 3" will sound worse (IMHO). |
