What's Your Exhaust Preference?

I'm a newbie here; in fact this is my first post. I've been reading the forum for the past 24 hours since i bought my new maxima! Anyway, i believe my first mod will be either an intake or an exhaust. I am curious which exhausts produce the best performance gains, which exhausts have the best sound, and which exhausts are the best looking and have good style. And it would be great if you guys could tell me which intake you prefer. Thanks in advance for the responses.:)

Greddy has a Cat-back. Y2KevSE has it, and so does someone else but I forget who. It has a single tip (not sure how big though). HKS has just the rear section of the exhaust, which starts right before the rear axle (look under your car and you will see where it starts). That muffler has two tips (not sure how big) which look really good. Stillen makes a rear section also, single tip. The Greddy would probably produce the best gains since it is a cat back, the HKS runs a little expensive for just a rear section, around $389 from eatricezone.com
Hope that helps.

 Still deciding which one to get. Any suggestions?

If you want performance gains ... don't get either the intake or the exhaust ... get a y-pipe ... that will be your best investment in terms of HP / $.

There is / was a group buy in the GD forum & the price is / was really good ...

If you are going 2 get exhaust ... what do you want?

I think that the GReddy & HKS will both give you about the same perf gains. As stated earlier, the GReddy is a true catback which is a plus.

The HKS which I have is simply the muffler. But it doesn't have the big bore tip which I find a little overplayed .. no disrespect to all you that have it.

I also chose the HKS b/c it's quieter ... but it's still not that quiet ... & you'll also very quickly find that the sound is very addictive and I want mine to be louder! I'm going to put in a custom b-pipe w/o the resonator in the spring to make it a little / lot louder.

Good luck!

congrats on the new maxima and welcome :D

mod in this order:

1. Intake of some sort
2. y-pipe
3. high-flow cat and cat-back
4. UDP

Most gains will be from the first two mods. The rest will help once you have the first two on :)

i prefer quietness.. so i say go with teh intake.. it's only loud when you punch the gas.. it's more dependent on your throttle position as opposed to the exhaust, it's loud when you want it and when you don't.. i got tips for my exhaust..

Get the the y-pipe first. But if you have the money go for the y-pipe and intake. This will give you you considerable amount of power and a nice V6 growl. :D From what the posts I've seen about exhaust its always good to start from the front of the car and work your way back. If you want to start with the back first then go with the Greddy since its catback. Just keep in mind the level of sound will be changed as you add more mods to the complete exhaust system.

Thanks guys for the replies - i really appreciate it. I am going to go with the HKS axle-back exhaust with a y-pipe of some sort - btw what's the best y pipe? I prefer to have the least rice sounding exhaust possible, so I think the HKS is it. My main preference is sound instead of power - but power is good too:D Then I will get an intake. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good intake?
Thanks again guys,
Daniel

There is either Cattman or Stillen. Cattman is stainless steel which wont rust (good if you have harsh winters) and Stillen's isn't stainless. I think they both sound the same.

those are y-pipes just to clarify. (since he asked about y-pipes and intakes in the same post)

If you want to see the HKS check out my homepage 2nd page have a pretty good pic of it there. Sounds really good like the greddy, Greddy will prob give you more gains cause its a cat-back but you can custom make a B-pipe and your set!
