starter rebuild kit?

Is there a starter brush rebuild kit that I can purchase for an 01 Max? If not I found a rebuilt starter for 80$ on ebay. Good price or no?

I don't know about a rebuild kit, but I just replaced my starter last week.

I purchased a re-manufactured one from AutoZone for 143$, with lifetime warranty.

I first bought one from Nissan $206 + 60$ core, but it was also a rebuilt one, and turned out to be the WRONG one for my car, so I ended up running to autozone at 9pm, so I could get the job finished that night because I needed my car.

It was a pain to remove the longer bolt, hard to get in there and get some force on it, but after that it was a breeze.

Thanks for chiming in and giving me an idea.

steer clear of the ebay starter. if it fails you are either stuck with it or a car that wont start for a while if they have a replacement policy.

I say auto zone or an equivalent FTW

Agreed totally!

I knew AutoZone had the cheaper price than Nissan did, but since I got such a good price on Nissan (206 vs 143) I figured I would go with OEM Nissan (Should last at least the 113k I had on the original one right?), it was not until my dad picked it up and brought it home that I realized it was a Reman Nissan starter. So once it didn't fit, that put the nail in the coffin and I just grabbed the AutoZone one, which honestly I think is better since it does have the lifetime warranty. Now that I've replaced it once, if I had to do it again I think I could knock it out in much less time than it took the first time.

I have bought parts from this store before and he has 1 year exchange policy on his starters. Could opt for the lifetime warranty but doubt I will have the car another year. Ive decided that the rebuilding of my starter just doesn't make sense.

The starter in my 97 went out and I took it to auto zone. they put it on their "wonderful," no load tester and told me it was good. The starter sounded like a big 18 wheeler was reving up in the back room. When I questioned that, I was told "they all sound like that." Like an idiot, I took the starter back to the car and re-installed it and wonder of wonders - it didn't crank at all, just like before I took it out. So I want to Napa auto parts, got a starter and have been happily starting away since.

Thats why AutoZone is good for some things and bad for others.

I ended up getting OEM from Courtesy Nissan for around 230ish delivered and didn't even have to send back the core (dont know what to do the old core now).

The box did say reman, but the actual unit looked really really good, new to me actually. If someone told me it was new I'd believe it.

First one lasted exactly 100K/8 years. New one works like a charm, instant starts. The old one was struggling over the last couple of months till finally it wouldn't crank it over, luckily while in the driveway instead of away from home.

Yeah, the long bolt did need a breaker bar to loosen, and getting some of the wiring harnesses out of the way was a little pain, but all in all an easy DIY.

So anyone know what to do with old starter cores?

I just picked up a rebuilt one with life time warranty from autozone for like 149 after tax and whatnot. Gave up my core. Install was real easy even with my big hands. I also had to use a breaker to get that far away bolt loose. Fairly easy install, took like 15-20 minutes to remove the starter and would have been faster to put back in but was battling the cold so had to take a trip back inside to warm up during the install.

thanks for the write ups on this site! Saved me atleast 40 bucks and gave me a better understanding how my car works.

I went to a small hole in the wall auto parts place, and he said"I can have it rebuilt in about 4 hrs". I asked," do you rebuild it" he said no, I have someone local do it. He wanted 100.00. So I thought if he's getting it done local, so can I. I looked in the phone book and found a place to do it for 75.00 with a 1yr warranty. Its been about 3mon. with no problom.
