Can somebody explain why an alignment is needed after replacing the transaxle? The Hayes book says nothing about this, but it is obvious to me after replacing my 1997 Maxima's drivers side axle, that an alignment is needed.

Some things I learned. This vehicle lived in NY for ten years, but luckily the axle had been replaced about four years ago. A 25" breaker bar was needed to get the axle nut off. Almost gave up, but penetrating oil and persistence pays off. The axle came out fairly easy after a trip to Harbor Freight to pick up a 20" pry bar. I did not leak any fluid and my levels were normal.

Depends how you install the axle. If you keep the knuckle bolted to the strut and go from underneath via the ball joint, you can get away with not getting an alignment. If you do disconnect the knuckle from the strut, you'll never assemble it back to EXACTLY how it was, hence the need for an alignment.

There was an entire thread about the need for an alignment after a strut job about a week or two ago, good information in there - search for it.
