Dealer can't get into the ECM??

I've had my 02 for almost 3 years now and on Wednesday I had a problem which never happened before. I recently lost my remote so I had to use the key to access my car. Then on Wed., the car wouldn't start and the Security light would stay on when I tried to crank the engine. So then it finally started after I played around with the key and the door lock. BUt on Thursday, it happened again and it never started again and the problem persisted. I searched around the forums and found out the keys needed to be reprogrammed. So I got the car towed to the dealer yesterday and they said it'll be done by this morning so when I called them this morning, they tell me that they can't even get into the ECM with the Consult II to reprogram the key and it is going to be a very involved job. What the hell does this mean? Is there something seriously wrong?

Is the ECU even getting power? That's the first thing to check.

There's at least one fuse and a relay to power the ECU, if it's not getting power that would cause your no start and not being able to access it.

He ypmohr, thanks for the help.

I did talk to the Dealership and they have told me that the ECU is bad and it needs to be replaced along with the relay (which relay is it?). HOW hard would it be to replace this on my own? I'm in no way of hell paying some $1500 for this fix. IT's absurd.

Does anyone know if a i35 ECU will work for a 02 SE AT?

Klutch Feb 5, 2009 12:22 PM

http://www.car-part.com get a used ECU.....

Dark Knight Feb 5, 2009 01:06 PM

get a new chipped ecu for like 200 bucks or so and have a higher redline and better air/fuel maps for more power,

honestly saying your ecu is bad seems kinda bogus to me, sounds like they just cant figure it out so they figure w/e its not our car just make him pay to replace the whole thing...

i am not saying their diagnosis is wrong or not since i have not seen the car but now you sound like a customer.
what do u mean the whole thing? you expect them to take the ecm apart and resolder loose connections onto motherboard?

go there replace the fuse and see what happens.. they might need the money form you.
