Rod broken. Is this the end of the road??

So after 8 years and about 190,000 miles later I have a loud knocking in my 2002 Maxima, the engine.

So the repair guy I go to said rod is broken and its time to hang it up for this car. I would like to know what other options I have.

1) I looked for engines but I not sure I want to pay 1100 for a replacement when Im starting to get the standard body rust on the wheel well.

2)I have a 6 speed, bose system with sunroof and all other options and everything still works inside; is this car still worth anything? Im in columbus ohio.

Try cars-parts.com. You should be able to buy a used motor much cheaper than 1100.

I try to look at these things like this.

Add the repair cost to the amount you could realistically pocket from selling it like it is. That's basically what it's going to cost you to keep the car.

Now take that figure and look at what type of car you could buy for JUST that amount. Chances are it wont be as nice as your current car if you just fixed it and it will certainly require some repairs.

With that perspective you have to add in your own variables like how much you like the car, how solid the rest of it is, recent/upcoming repairs and how much extra you're willing to pay for a newer car.

I look at it like that because we often hear "the repair costs more than the value of the car". Well sure, but how much car can you buy for the same money and what problems will it have?

Sounds to me like you have some kind of valve problem.

Dennis has a point, I am not sure it's a rod problem. Get a stethoscope and listen. You should be able to narrow it to a specific location.

Probably the rear valve cover, smoked the #5 exhaust shims very very bad, maybe the #3 a little also, which happens from racing around with no oil.

If the car overall is in good shape -> throw in another motor because there are a ton of vq35de out there

Otherwise -> dump it and move onto another 6 speed sedan

They must not be very smart. Cars are worthless, now. Scrap prices are in the ****ter. I'd take that and run.

I think you'd get maybe 100 bucks here. But with a blown engine...maybe not even that.

Read that some people said their yard is paying zero. 50 bucks for the car, 50 bucks to pick it up lol.
