2000 maxima se 5 speed holds 18.5 gallons and are supposed to guzzle between 22 mpg and 28 mpg. that means maxima se's are supposed to go 407-518 miles per fillup. i drive to san francisco to los angeles approximately 450 miles. since i'm drivin on the highway 90% of the time, i expected to get closer to the 28 mpg averaging 80-90 mph with a few spirts past 100 mph. however, warning light comes on.. i fill up and calculate that i drove 15.5 gallons for 305 miles which = 19.67 mpg. are your mpg this bad? how do i fix this? gas prices are like $2.30 up here. i don't think i broke in my engine properly when i first bought the car... is my engine forever ruined?? i'm so sad. any help will be appreciated.

He-He... Silly wabbit.....
Don't you know.... Those MPG gas averages advertised by Nissan are true..... IF YOU DON'T EXCEED THE MAXIMUM SPEED LIMIT.... so if you travel @ 65 mph for an extended periond you should come very close to the 27 MPG that the Max is supposed to be getting... (it's not 28, that's for the Auto... higher geared... which is also why it's slower). If you are flying at 100 MPH you are getting probably under 14 MPG at those times.... so that will bring your overall average down..... so if you want fuel economy... DRIVE LIKE a GRAND-MAA

Ru using high octane?
I think if u used high octane and didn't average 85 mph you would be getting better gas millage. I know I am discouraged by the results of my mpg as well. I had a 98 200 sx that I drove like I stole it and it always got better than 32 mpg. I am not sure how nissan ever got 27 out of the maxima...must have been going downhill with a tailwind with a 90 pound woman driving the car with nothing in the car but the spare.

I always get 27-29mpg on the highway no matter how fast i drive, and always get 22-24mpg commuting to work 50/50 mix of city highway. I don't drive all out all the time but I don't baby it either, you would be suprised how much more gas you use when you floor it on a regular basis.

Hmmmm, if u r drivin in long stretches of highway u should get way more than only 305 to the E light. I recently drove the same trip (approx 80-90 mph) as u from LA to SF and i found out the Maxima is wayyyyyy more efficient on long trips, i would say i got bout 400+ miles before the light. Here in LA with stop and go traffic and some local i only get bout 305 (which totally sucks) before the light pops up. How many miles do u have on ur car ????? Dont they recommend u not to drive over 55mph b4 u hit the 5500 mile mark. Maybe tats y u got such poor mileage if not i would go to the dealer and complain.

The VQ seems to be VERY sensitive to your right foot. Drive it with any more than what Ms. Daisy would, you won't get more than 20-22mpg. But drive it contantly at 70-75mph, you will get crazy MPG. Last year I drove through VA. going no more than 75, got about 35-37mpg.

Man I don't know what U guys are doing but I always get about 370 per tank in city and about 470-500 on hwy. I went to Miami a few months ago from NC, left NC and fuled after jacksonville FL, thats about 500miles. I can drive my car hard as heck in city and I would get about 340, on normal driveing I get about 370 in city, on hwy I always get over 430 B4 the lights turns on. I always keep my fluids fresh in the car, and I always put 93Gas in the car. Make sure your cars are tuned up good. when I had my 4th gen I got similer miles on that car too. Now My 99 4Runner was another story.. damn 280miles and the damn gas light would be on. Boy that was a lot of Money. 280 miles.. that hurts

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHA
maybe if you hit cruise control at 45 mph, don't hit any traffic and don't stop at any red lights, meters, stop signs, pedestrian crosswalks. yea I can see that happening!
I get about 250-300 on a tank, but then I have a lead foot. Acceleration is such a waste of time.... :P

I30 gas.
Well, I'm pretty sure my car weighs a good amount more than the Max, i'm at 3600 i think, plus 100 lbs of sound equipment, plus 180 lbs of driver, plus driving hills all day, plus whatever else. I'm at 250-300 miles per tank. Tank holds 18.5, but fillups are typically about 14 gallons. I've seen as low as 13mpg (when i was at play) and 21mph when i was seeing what i could do. I havn't done too much long driving, but i'll soon. The hills kill you...plus that magnetic metal under the gas pedal.

I live in the mountains of western NC, and get about 340 miles to the tank roughly, but I fill up before the light comes on. I average about 20 to 22 mpg which here is not too bad, plus I like the "red light pick up turn green" this car has. Long trips of 80 mph, I got 450 miles to the tank. 100 mph, check your RPMs compared to 60 mph. Hell, even 60 mph is quite a bit different than 80 mph in RPMs

Ehh...Quick Math lesson huh?
Miles Per Gallon is exactly what it sounds like..
MILES PER (read divided by) GALLONS..
Say you go 450 miles on 18.5 gallons (unrealistic cuz your tank ONLY holds 18.5 gallons, burn 18.5 and you end up pushing your car home)... to get the MPG, pull out your calculator,
press 450
press divide key
press 18.5
press =, enter, etc...
OH, one more thing... your MPG depends on SEVERAL THINGS... Since this post is in the 5th GEN Maxima Forum, I am assuming we're only talking about relatively new, well-tuned, etc. cars.. Therefore, the BIGGEST determining factor is your speed... Why?... well, there's this little thing called atmosphere.. Apparently, it turns out that the amount it slows you down depends on how fast your going.. Why? That's just the way it is [I mean I could explain it, but it would require quite a bit of physics with a smidge of higher level calculus] Go figure..
Ie... I usually commute @ 75mph.. I burn about 1/8th of the tank every day.... On a particularly rainy week [rain drives people nuts on the road], I end up burning a LOT less...
Turns out the OPTIMUM SPEED for gas efficiency, for MOST cars is 55mph... It all depends on the aerodynamics tho, and just looking at my Maxima, I would assume 65mph doesn't hold much penalty... anything more than that, and I'm fairly certain your MPG SEVERELY drops...

scrap mpg's
i think we should all convert to the most commonly used fuel efficiency measuring benchmark, used in most countries around the world:
ie: how many litres of fuel do you need to go 100 kilometers.
Now THATS an equation that tells you something!

I got about
21mpg when I was testing the car on the NJ Turnpike! I had the cruise control set to 70MPH, with a couple of sprints to 100MPG (to race another 2K Max )!
So all in all, that 100 miles that I traveled only used 4.5 gallons, which had me at 3/4 of a tank! So I estimate I would only get about 350-375 miles per tank (because I never let the fuel light come on, and always fill up at 1/4 of a tank)!
That's not too bad!

I have seen people on this site time and time again complain about their gas mileage and they almost every time say that they "drive the crap out of it" and wonder why their MPG is so poor!
On my last fill up I went over 370 miles and averaged around 24 to 25 MPG ...But I have gotten better than that before...with some right foot restraint!

What doesn't cease to amaze me, is that someone driving a $20k+ car would be pinching pennies on gasoline..
Dammit, I'm a college student, and I pay on average $1.70 for 93 octane.., I know I don't get anywhere NEAR 28 MPG on my 2k Maxima :-)

Ya... then you wonder why insurance rates are so high :-)
Seriously.., I haven't seen anyone else my age driving a Maxima, mostly old people.. Always a shame to see some antique driving a shiny new Maxima in the right hand lane..

unless of course you filled up your tank all the way up with 18.5 gallons and drove it until there wasnt a drop left in the tank!
what you gotta do is: write down exactly how many gallons were put in the car when you filled up...run it down till youre ready to fill up...then see how many gallons it took this fillup...that will tell you 'approximately' how many gallons you used...divide THAT by the miles driven and their is your 'estimated' MPG.
even THAT method is not EXACT.
Trust me...your cars are almost brand new...theres nothing wrong with them....ITS YOUR DRIVING STYLE that influences your MPG. I dunno about you guys...but i don't do 55mph on the highway....more like 95mph...i know THAT'S why i only get 300 miles to the gas light.

MPG
THE ONLY TIME I GOT OVER 20 MPG WAS ON THE TRIP(COMBINATION OF SOME CITY, BUT MOSTLY HIGHWAY) FROM NYC TO CT, WHEN I GOT 23 MPG. OTHER THAN THAT IT DOESN'T GET BETTER THAN ABOUT 18 MPG, BUT NOT COMPLAINING SINCE WORKING IN NJ AND FILLING UP WITH $1.65 PER GALLON ON 93 OCTANE.
IF I WAS GONNA WORRY ABOUT MY FOOT RESTRAINTS, AND NOT GOING OVER 55MPH, I WOULD'VE BOUGHT A KIA. HEHEHE LOL
WHY GET A MAXIMA WHEN DRIVING LIKE AN OLD FART???

Filled up, Set my trip meter. averaged 80 MPH sometimes going 95 MPH... and got there and Wham!!!! still 1/4 tank left.... refilled the tank... it took 13.8 GL... Trip Meter: 382 miles..... 27.68 GPM..... did it again on the way back.... 383 miles... it took 13.6 GL........28.16 MPG..... I guess I cold go 500 miles before my next fuel stop.....
