So I'm AEing my '00 headlights but have a question

Well, I haven't FINISHED the process yet, but anyway... I have an extra headlight laying around so I went about AEing it. Bake-pull-tape-paint... you know the drill.

Problem is, when I took the tape off the marker light and thin headlight border area, the tape took some of the chrome paint with it.

Before I reassemble and do the other light, what paint should i use to touch up the (small) spots?

I'm really excited to see these lights on my Super Black GXE. :D

I threw a couple dots of chrome touch up paint on the spots that rubbed off, but it looked like ***.

What if I gloss whited the parking light surround and thin headlight surround?? I'm not sure that I've seen that done before, and given that the '00-'01 headlights don't really allow a perfectly clear look inside anyway, it might not look too bad?

I'm sure glad I have a 3rd headlight.

Don't paint. Just rub with a rag and water on the parts you want black and it will reveal black underneath. Don't rub the reflector part of the headlamp as you want that to remain chrome.

Well... I left the headlight reflector alone, that will stay chrome.

And looking at factory AE headlights I see that quit a bit of the side marker area is left chrome as well.

On this spare light I was thinking of just blacking the entire bezel, marker light area and all, just to see how it looks.

I'll try it and post a pic.

If it looks assy then I'l duplicate the AE pattern exactly on my remaining two headlights.

its been done every which way, i've seen guys even black out the reflector for the turn. If its goofed just paint it black. its all good.

Anyone know what bulb I can replace my turn signal bulbs with? Isn't there a chrome bulb that lights up amber that I can throw in there

I want to ae my headlights but have a question
From pictures most people are using flat black ... does anyone how it will look if i use gloss black?

djfrestyl Feb 27, 2010 12:47 PM

The same, just shinier :D

i AE'ed my headlights a long time ago,and from personal experience i would give you advice not to paint them, but to bake them obviously and use a plastic polish on the area you want "ae'ed" because it will remove the chrome, but at the same time its almost like a black chrome appearance unless you do it longer than i had done it,i seen painted lights and the plastic polish rubbed lights and i would definately advise you use the polish because paint wears off after so long....

I went ahead and did the whole chrome piece in black. I lightly sanded the chrome and used a coat of primer first then applied the final color. I happened to have an almost new can of Duplicolor trim paint, so I used that. Shoulda used a high temp paint instead, I think I woulda been happier.

here's an idea, if the trim you painted is a matte black that is, tape off everything BUT the reflector, and paint the reflector a high gloss black, maybe a clear coat finish, that way it will match the rest of the headlight, but still have reflective properties :gotme:

i painted the reflectors black on mine, see sig, if you wanna see how it looks.
