MY D*MN SUNROOF WON'T OPEN!!!

My sunroof on my 2001 maxima SE has stopped opening today. I use my sunroof EVERY SINGLE day. I can no longer enjoy that fresh air coming in over my head lol. Anyways, I tried all the resetting techniques. I tried unplugging the battery for a while, I tried pressing each and every button on the sunroof switch and holding it for a period of time. The sunroof makes no noise at all. When I press any of the buttons the sunroof is silent. I checked all the fuses and fusible links that I know of and everything is perfect. I called Nissan and they said it most likely must be that the motor is shot and that will charge me 500 dollars to replace LOL. If anyone has ever had a problem similiar to this then please feel free to leave some feedback here. Anything you guys can suggest would help. Thanks!!

Why not replace the motor yourself?

Why would nissan charge you for sunroof?. I thought sunroof is lifetime warranty

Before you do anything, I would test the motor directly. Take the control module off by pulling down and towards the passenger side, this will expose the motor. I would run some 14AWG from the battery and directly contact the motor; this will rule out the switch being bad. No go, time for a new motor.

Thanks metal maxima and everyone else. I will try your suggestions as soon as I get a chance and let you guys know if anything worked out.

Are the selections in your switch loose at all? Like it's too easy to slide back and forth? My old car did that before the switch started going out completely. I would bang on it and then it would start working again haha.

The dealership is more or less than going to a mechanic to get it fix? Or are they roughly the same?

Yeah I hear that. I wish they had a warranty on these type of things, such as the motors in vehicles.

 Most do.

Just take a multimeter and see if the motor gets voltage, if it doesnt then test before the switch, if the switch gets power but the motor doesnt (while switch in the open/on position) then its the switch, if the motor gets power along with the switch, then its the motor....order part, drink beer, and replace yourself.

check fuses before chaging the motor relays as well.

bigpimpen092 Sep 11, 2009 05:53 PM

Okay, I checked all the fuses, I'm not too sure how to check the relays but I know they are behind the fuse and I will have someone help me check that soon. I checked the switches and there is no power going to the switches. There is power going to my light that is next to the switch but no power to the switch at all. Once I check the relays, I'm pretty sure the only thing it can be is the motor and I will check a junk yard for that.
