Automatic 4 speed to automatic 5 speed

Happy New year 2010! I would like to if someone converted a nissan maxima 2002 se vq35 4 speed automatic to a 5 speed automatic from from a 2004 to 2006 maxima tranny? And is it plug ang play?

thank you!

Well I can tell you that it is definitely NOT plug and play.

You would probably need the 6th gen TCM or ECU or both.

if you really want to do it, your hands will be very dirty and you will probably have a headache for 2010! :D

you will also need some wireing harness that feed the trans info and info to tcm from trans.. the 5 speed auto's are very expenseve to rebuild compared to the 4 speed auto's. the 5 speeds have major valve body problems. the valve body solinoids are not sold seperatly so you have to buy the whole valve body assy.around $850 from dealer

I hear of more 6th gen auto maximas with tranny issues than 5th gen, so I'd stay away.

Here's a link to the same question which I posed long ago. It has some interesting replies including simulations which show a very minor performance gain.

here's the thing about the 5spd tranny, it's not a real 5 gears transmission, it's a CVT, the 6th gen went away with the traditional auto tranny. They put CVT, that's why they don't even offer 5 spd or 6 spd manual. So why would you want to go to a CVT? Only way you can get a real automatic, is the 7spd, offered on the Z and found on all Infiniti.

CVT wasn't offered initially in the 6th gens, they had 4 (base model) and 5 speed automatics. I believe the CVT came out in 2007.

Are you sure, i recall it was CVT, that's one of the turn off, when they rolled in the 6th gen in 2004 since I remember they had put the technology on the flagship car.

they offered 4sp and 5sp autos in 2004, then just 5sp till 2007

Yes.

First 6gens ahd a 4AT or a 6MT
After a few months, they went to a 5AT and kept the 6MT

so most 04-06 are 5AT or 6MT, with a few 04s that have a 4AT

in 07 they went to the cvt

and the 7 speed auto is for a longitudal motor and won't fit in a maxima
