Official Intro Thread. New Owners, Step In.

This thread is for new owners who have just purchased their 5th or 5.5 gen.

Post pics, future plans and anything else you think is relevant (price, mileage, location, etc).

DO NOT post questions regarding problems/troubleshooting, etc.

There are the sticky's and of course the :newbie: thread for things like that.

Welcome the the org man. Sounds like you've already got some good plans for the car. Good luck with all of it.

Rochester 02-12-2011 10:39 AM

Welcome. Low mileage  Good find.

Threads like this make me nostalgic for SoonerFan and his particular... idiom.

MaximusTi 02-12-2011 11:04 AM

Welcome ! The .org is a great resource.

Use the search function and do lots of reading. Most of the answers already exist somewhere around here, just read up in advance and you'll learn things you didn't even know where issues.

Your mod list sounds great, start with a Y-pipe on your 3.0 and you'll notice some decent gains.

Best of Luck !

ChrisMan287 02-12-2011 11:07 AM

Welcome back! Plans sound good.

Many of my early posts included a war with soonerfan. I almost miss him hanging around. Almost.

Welcome to the big happy Nissan family!!

Hi, I am also new to this site but I am not new to Nissan. I acquired my 1996 Maxima GLE in 2005 when I traded with my dad., He wanted a smaller and simpler car so I gave him my 1997 Mercury Tracer-also a great car but not a Maxima. I still have it and it has nearly 141,000 miles on it. It's looking a little rough but it still runs like new. I can keep up with most cars on the road and it gets me where I need to go safely and reliably. Of course I have had to fix things along the way and it needs work from time to time but overall it is a great car. I think you will come to love your 2000 Max just as much and as long as you take care of it then it will take care of you. tha't what a Maxima does the best-takes care of its owner.

Congratulations on buying a Maxima. Happy driving!!!

BigLou55 02-12-2011 02:36 PM

def a nice find with only 66k...i bought my at 167k and i plan on getting her to 400k over time of course she has 171k right now

No. I wish there were an introduction thread. Not because these things annoy me, but because it feels more organized and welcoming.

Yeah, but those are a poor fit for this situation, Manny.

I recommend you create and sticky a thread called:
5th Gen New Member Introductions
...and move the content of threads like this when you find them.

Good grief, I really need to sit down and get the sticky situation here under control. :faint:

keepitclean 02-14-2011 02:15 PM

i was just lookin and none of the gens have there own intro for noobies other then "Ask A QUESTION HERE NOOBS".

djfrestyl 02-14-2011 02:31 PM

An intro thread is a cool idea. Though I can see how it may mix with the noob thread. If it's all in good spirit though, does it matter?

NmexMAX 02-14-2011 02:35 PM

We need maybe a non-formal intro thread. Not saying how bad the MAF sucks and your ECU was fried th day after you bought it because of the IACV, but more of an informal/social thread, treading lightly with the technical stuff, and more on the ohai sorta thing. Also, after a brief overview of all the sticky's, the vast majority of them could be consolidated into 1-3 separate sticky's vs. eleventy.

:reading: I'll bring this up to mgmt

:mrgone:

Waxima 02-14-2011 03:07 PM

The intro thread is a good idea. On a lot of other sites I've seen, making an intro post/thread is mandatory before being able to join the community.

OP, let's see some more/better pics of your car. It looks clean.

SeedyROM 03-08-2011 07:36 PM

Pics of my new 5th gen and an introduction

First off, thanks to AWESOME-O and Scottwax for the referrals to .ORG. This place certainly is a wealth of information

Anyway, I'm a long-time Nissan owner (Zs and Pathfinders) and former moderator over at TwinTurbo.net (Z32 site). However, this is my first Maxima and so far the experience has been great. I needed a replacement for my 1st gen Path and wanted to keep it in the family, so the Max was high up on my list. Unfortunately, I didn't have much to spend with an imminent house purchase and the Z needing a motor. That said, I stumbled upon a great deal just last week on an 5.5 gen...so here I am.

I spotted it on Craigslist claiming one-owner so I called up and ran the VIN number. Sure enough, it was bought locally in 2002 and completely dealer maintained for 9 years. Every oil change was done on time and they had every service record. I went out for a test drive and that car was everything I hoped for. The interior was spotless, the engine was strong and it drove straight and smooth. The only hit against it was the exterior had various scrapes, scratches and poorly done touch-ups from being driven to and parked at college. It also needed a clay/wax badly but I could see the potential underneath. The exterior issues combined with their desire to unload the car quickly (upcoming vacation) played well into my favor. Once all was said and done, I ended up with a 2002 Maxima SE for $4,500, a full $500 under my strict budget and way, way more car than I expected to get :D

Anyway, this post is long enough so let's get on with the pics. Here's an example of the body condition. There were a dozen of these poorly done touch-ups all over.

http://otonly.com/x0311/touchupfix1.jpg

After some rubbing compound. Even before touching it up it already looks better. The rubbing compound and subsequent buffing took out 90% of these.
http://otonly.com/x0311/1touchupfix2.JPG

And some completed shots after wash/clay/wax. Came out amazing!

http://otonly.com/x0311/max4.jpg

The interior as you can see was spotless. I didn't even have to detail it much at all. As far as I can tell she had no friends because the seats look like no one had ever sat on them.

Anyway, there you have it!

SeedyROM 03-08-2011 07:43 PM

I forgot to add that just browsing around .org the last day and a half already has me thinking about a few basic mods, especially coming in under budget like I did.

I've got some '01 AE tails on the way which I think will go with the darker color a bit better and I want to lower it some. I found the ShiftIce guide (great page!) and plan on some Eibach/Progressive springs on either KYB or Illuminas. If there are any "must do" tips/tricks for a new owner, I'd appreciate the heads up!

azdevils013 03-08-2011 07:51 PM

Welcome to the org, and that is a good lookin' Max. Love the color. Good luck with your future mods.

95VQ30 03-08-2011 07:54 PM

more Merlot to drink.

Welcome

TunerMaxima3000 03-08-2011 07:55 PM

Looks like a great deal, how many miles are on that thing?

Other than the cloth seats, definitely a good buy IMO if the mileage is low.

I got mine for $5500 CAD with a stillen kit and tints, and only 88,000 km (about 55,000 miles). So Welcome to the happy owner club! :)

As far as mods go, I'd try to drive it for a bit before doing anything, you want to make sure she's not going to peg you with anything unexpected, maxima's can hit you hard with costly parts if you can't do the work yourself, or wait for parts to be shipped.

But when you do, lowering it will be a big one, as I'm sure most will testify that the improved handling/appearance makes it one of the most usable modifications (daily use).

And I'd paint the grill Black, it doesn't look right on merlot. It would look amazing black.

Waxima 03-08-2011 08:08 PM

Welcome, looks like a great pickup for 4500. Nice Z you have there in your sig. :drool1:

Almost forgot that, 120k miles. So it does have a good amount on it but compression was good and no sludge in the motor so my fingers are crossed. Great advice on waiting a bit, which I will do. Going to give it about a month before I do anything.

Also a great idea on the grill. I hadn't thought of that but I'll definitely look into it!

Thanks! Funny how it worked out that the Z is a similar metallic red. It's not quite Merlot but the Cherry Red has similar shades depending on sun/cloud cover. It looks different day to day :D

It's super easy and reversible- just use black plasti dip.
