02 Maxima has HID low beams, but Halogen high beams?

Hey everybody.
Just traded my 08 maxima for 02 maxima. already love it better than the other car.
But i noticed the car does have HID (4300k)? but the high beams are halogen.
I have another friend who has a 02 maxima, but has low and high beams HID.
Is this normal?
Can i change the high beams to HID as well?

MaximusTi 04-18-2011 07:26 AM

Yes. They all came this way. Some people retrofit HID projectors into the high-beam housing but that is kind of hit and miss depending on how you approach it.

HID's do not like being toggling on/off for short periods of time which is why you don't see them in the Max's.

You can do it if you want, but it does shorten the life of the bulb.

ahh ok
well my other friend was saying that, for rain or country driving , the high beam halogen actualy are better to see for those situations. i thnk hes right too. and ill prob just stick in the range of 4300-5000k Hid, i dont want to go any higher than that.

If you need more high beam light, check out 9011 bulbs.

From a pure lighting perspective, that's a good decision. Anything beyond around 6K you start to lose light.

very interesting switch...just curious as to why? no car payments? you liked this gen better? etc?

You're better off just upgrading the halogen high beams with nicer halogen bulbs. I have PIAA in my High Beams definately nice.

Then again, I don't understand why if your lights are off and you flash the high beams, they turn on the HIDs also, not just the high beam bulbs. Isn't this pretty much doing the same thing. It appears Nissan designed our low beams to flash also, even though it is not great for the bulb. Also, with the factory alarm, the lights flash when it is triggered, another thing I don't really understand. Sorry if it comes off that I'm ranting...

LiQkUiD 04-18-2011 10:46 AM

To be honest, i needed lower car payments. I never really liked the 08 maxima from day one, kinda regreted it, lost more options.
The 02 max i have now, has black leather seats, sunroof, 6 cd changer, and frankly i like this generation better than the 04-08 series.

And yes i think i will just upgrade the high halogen bulbs to a better quality because the ones now, kinda are not to my satisfaction.

Just get some 100W 9005's off eBay. You'll like them and they're much better than stock high beam halogens which are lower watts.

zzmmrx0xmzz 04-18-2011 11:15 AM

They come as halogen and the only way is to install a HID kit to the high beams

Clashez 04-18-2011 11:49 AM

Why in the world would u trade in an 08 for an 03............. thats kind of backwards

Today's economy are forcing people to rethink their budgets. Lots of people are giving up there expensive newer car payments for used cars which they can pay off right away.

Liqkuid said why in an earlier post Clashez.

I have a 55 watt hid kit in my high beams, only issue is you cant really flash them and they take 10-15 seconds to warm up

Do you even bother to read threads anymore?

First, he already answered that question,
Second, he bought a 02, not an '03

LiQkUiD 04-18-2011 06:44 PM

cool, thanks everybody. So i will eventually upgrade my halogen bulbs and will prob either get the stock 4300k hid or 5000k .

TunerMaxima3000 04-18-2011 08:24 PM

I recently found out some whinning info. 4300k and 5000k are usually the same thing, most HID kit guys just relable 4300k or 6000k as 5000k.

The reason is, 5000k is the newer colour for OEM (commonly) because they use different techniques for the bulbs (new version of HID bulb). But the cheaper Aftermarket isn't going to make a colour shift of 700k, that wouldn't be profitable.

Beware of any HID seller that says their product is 5000k.

ESPECIALLY HIDextra, NEVER deal with them.

ELGUPASO 05-23-2011 05:04 PM

I think they put the high beams there because they flash faster than the hids. And OP, I agree with you on the 5.5 being the best gen.

Agreed! I love not having a car payment anymore. My 2000 with 160,000 still rides and drives nearly like new :D

I wrote to Nissan way back in 02 when I got my SE, asking them about flash to pass and its effect on the bulbs. They claimed it was not a problem. After 9 years, and my headlights coming on every time I leave or enter my garage, plus countless flash to pass events, I'd have to agree.

One HID bulb went out last week. Waiting for my replacement to come in from Amazon ($39, compared to >$200 at Nissan dealer)

lywenlong 07-23-2012 08:27 AM

it is not good to change high beam to hid bulb. i suggest that dont chagne it.

Gizm0 07-23-2012 08:53 AM
