Got premade flip key today, can't program
 

First of all it looks like it's just an assembled version of the flip key kit you can buy but with an uncut key. Was hoping by buying a premade I would get better quality so in that regard I am a bit disappointed. The thing is closer in size to a garage door opener than my sister's VW flip key.

That is the review portion of the thing and all that is besides the point.

Before I go get it cut I wanted to program the fob portion since I don't have one that works now. So here are the steps I took:

1. Got in car
2. Locked car by auto lock on driver door
3. Insert and removed key 6 times (my hazards then flash twice)
4. Insert key 7th time and turn to ACC
5. Press a button on fob (have tried lock and unlock car does nothing to respond as far as I can tell, per directions I only push fob button once)
6. Turn key to off and remove
7. Press unlock on driver's door
8. Open door and get out.
9. Close door
10. Hit lock on fob but get no response.

So I tried that about 10 times with no luck thinking I messed something up. I seem to be following the directions in the instructions and those found by searching so was hoping someone could look at that and see that it was something I missed before I email this guy.

Edit: Yes I tried a different battery just to make sure.

The remote key fobs have a specific radio frequency they work at. To identify this, there is a FCC ID number molded into the case of the fob. For the 2000 Max, the FCC ID is NHVWBU43. Anything else means it is for another year.

anything other than a dealer fob is garbage.......believe it .

You just proved to me this guy is assembling some kit, these don't have an FCC ID number on them anywhere so obviously that was on the back of the original fob. That or these are some cheap China crap.

Thanks for the number though hopefully he can just ship me the replacement fob circuit. Pisses me off though I could have made the flip key myself I was trying to get something better.

why dont you just swap out the guts from your stock one to the new one. guaranteed working since its already programmed.

Because the buttons on the old circuit board are what broke

I got the keyless entry portion programmed just fine. Had to get the key cut at Ace Hardware (cut it for free) and when I went to get the chip in that keyfob programmed it wouldn't program. So when I ended up doing was taking out the chip from my actual key and putting it in the new switchblade key. Worked well for about 4 months. The key broke off in the ignition cylinder as if i twisted it too hard it broke where the base of the key meets the head. Also for some reason the chip to the key stopped working so i had to get a new factory key.

Perhaps it was my luck or just a crappy product but it was awesome while it lasted. Got lots of compliments. Either way it might not be worth the hassle. Just thought I'd chime in since I did have one.

You guys know if the key fob will work on a 4th gen? If not why?

I want to say it depends on the model. I know my 98SE had a fob my 95 GLE did not come with one though maybe it could have? Not sure how you check for the capability though.

Read post # 2. Translation - The security system built into the car uses radio frequency between the security module and the key fob. Nissan uses a different radio frequency every couple of years.

The 2000 key fob won't work with the 4th gen. You need to get one that is made for your specific year model. All you have to do if find one.

Hey Dennis quick question. This guy advertised the unit as being compatible with 2000 and 2001 Max. Do they use the same FCC ID or is that where the problem could be?

Gotcha. Would I be able to switch out the security systems? Cause the flip key fob for the 4th gen is ugly.

Just googled around and saw some differences. Worth a try.

4. Insert key and turn to the ON position but don't start the car.
5. press the Unlock button and the hazards should blink once.

Thanks Tom tried that to no avail. I took the unit to autozone and it is broadcasting a signal so I am fairly certain it is just the wrong signal.

Just adding to the compatibility confusion. My brother has a 01 maxima with an 02-03 style key fob programed to it and its working perfectly fine.

Lame. This just really puts me in a bad position since the FCC ID is not marked on the fob I got I have no way of deciding by process of elimination which one I need :confused:

Edit: In another thread I saw that somewhere the FCC ID is printed in the car? Is this true and where is this?

Edit 2: Thanks to essential's info and finding a chart I did not in my previous searches I have now cracked the puzzle and shortly will be able to provide accurate matching info for FCC ID numbers and model years.

Any 2000 Maxima manufactured before 6/2000 uses part number 28268-4Z400 I believe that is actually the 99 fob. In my case I was manufactured 3/2000 so this would be me.

Any manufactured between 6/2000 and 6/2001 uses part number 28268-4Y900 This is probably the part number in the fob I received.

Any manufactured between 6/2001 and EOP of the A33 Maxima uses part number 28268-5Y701 I believe essential's brother's 2001 was probably manufactured after June of 01 hence why it uses what is usually the 5.5 fob

In this case I have FCC ID for the following:

4/99-6/00 5th gen - NHVBU427 - This is described as also being for the Sentra. I need someone with an early 2000 to verify PLEASE???
6/00-6/01 5th gen - KBRASTU10
6/01-EOP 5 & 5.5 gen - KBRASTU15

Can people verify their Date of Production and these numbers for me? Obviously that leaves NHVWBU43 out of the picture so if people could line that model up with one of those 3 year ranges that would help also.

No, the security systems are different and so the modules are not switchable.

I thought that all 2000 & 2001 used the same keyfobs, so evidently I am wrong about that especially when I saw that Courtesy Nussan lists a remote for a 2000 and anoter for a 2001.

My Max is an early 2000, manufactured in May, 1999 and uses the NHVWBU43 FCC ID, not what that website indicates.

I have 2 versions of the FSM for the 2000 which specify a serial number range for early/late, but does not mention production date. There are also 2 versions of the 2002 FSM.

my key fob has the same fcc id as dennismik and the part number it has says 282682y/nissan

I wish I had just taken the FCC id off the old remote before I chucked it. My own fault for assuming there would be a universal part but frustrating nonetheless.

The weird part about that chart is that cars which share a FCC ID still have a different part number... except the 00 Max. That makes me think typo or interchangeable part. Seems like everyone has NHVWBU43 though so that is what I will try to get
