Spray Can Paint Job
 

Well the Max had this rust spot on the right fender forever. Because I have not repaired it in time, it got to a point that no repair was possible. I called Napa and a new fender was only 75$.... Since I was going to do a bit of body work, I thought it was a good time fix the broken and scratched bumper as well.

As I cant do nothing half way, I ordered new fender liners, new engine splash guards, (some were missing). All bolts, clips, and brackets to do the job were also ordered from Nissan.

I dont have access to a reliable compressor for shooting paint properly so I decided to follow the advices from the paint rep of the auto parts where I usualluy go to. He suggested to use spray can, Well the result is impressive! The primer coat was wet sanded and 3 coats of clear were applied.

I also built a semi-paint booth with a ventilation panel made of two bathroom fans blowing into 3inches flexible tubes in order to withdraw gases outside of the garage.

That looks to damn good to be out of a spray can, or did you use the gun...but Damn very good job...:D

Sitting off of the car looks pretty darn good. kind of curious of how it will match the rest of the car when it is installed. good job. keep us posted.

I have the same concern... The hood needs to be redone as well due to clear flaking off.

One thing is sure, It cant be worse than it was, too bad I dont have Before pictures.

Impressive work!!!!!!!! Where did you get the spray from? I've been looking for a place that has oem paint so I can paint my lips.

BTW OP where did you get the engine splash guards I need some badly...I see you got bolts, brackets and clips from nissan, did you get the engine splash guards there also? A part number would be helpful if you have one, Ive searced courtesy nissan and I could not locate them

You can actually do impressive work with a rattle can if you know what you're doing, though. It's just like any other paint. Wet sanding and buffing can make rattle can paint look just as good as paint shot from an actual gun...

Now, would I rattle can my entire car? Probably not...but in small areas like a bumper or fender, I don't see why not.

Yea it does look good. I think he playing with us though by saying he used a spray can. But for real, if you got true skills like that you should be outsourcing yourself to people by doing some custom murals.

I've heard clear coating from a rattle can leaves a finish that isnt as hard as a spray gun finish? Anyway it looks great. Where did you get the cans of paint from?

I agree with Brett, spray can jobs can be very good if done with patience and allowing proper coats, etc. The downfall is the propellant doesn't help the chemical structureof the paint, this usually translates to poor cure hardness, and overall durability when compared to a proper spray gun paint job.

Initially, and for most of our use, there's nothing really wrong with it though. The other downfall is the colour will be almost impossible to match 100% with a spray can for the same reason, the propellant throws things off just a bit.

Yes this job was really done from spray cans. Maybe the pictures are better than reality? There is some orange pealing, but nothing that can be fixed after.

Tuner Maxima3000: You just confirmed my thoughts. I hope the paint on the bumper will hold 2-3 years without being affected too much by stone chips. Since whether started to be colder during the past few weeks, I made sure to control the temperature of the room and from the can with a lazer temp gun. I was only shooting when both were above 20 celcius. Humidity was also pretty low due to the kerosen heater.

Biglou55: It also took me forever to find the Part Numbers. Nissan had them classified under Floor fittings....

Well OP, if it puts your mind at ease at all, I spray canned my grille, as have many here, and mine has held up very well, I drive all highway miles too. No chips at all so far. Then again, it's only been on there for just shy of a year now, and isn't as big of a target as the bumper.

Most of autoparts selling paint can mix your exact color and press in in a can.
Pro Form has a product line of cans with all required additives inside, the only thing missing is the paint.

My colour code is AX5 red. There were about 20 variation samples in the color book from my autoparts, we went outside with the book and under sun light found the matching one. Then it is up to the guy mixing the paint to do his magic. I hope he did it right! Seems to be close though.

Ive used this paint company on my last QX1 03 max and the color was spot on they use oem colors.they have rattle cans and sprayable paints.question for the OP did you use a flex additive in your basecoat?

Fantastic Job, really like the home made paint both. I have also done a similar job to both my front and rear bumper covers as well as both the lips ... nothing wrong with using the aerosol spray cans one just has to take their time to get a nice even coat. I get my spray cans from Napa Auto Supplies up here in Ontario as some of them have paint dept's. Just order my car code (KT3) with flex and clear coat already added (as they mix and prepare the spray cans right there onsite), spray goes on nice and even and dries with a gloss which I increase by adding two more coats of clear coat. Paint still looks great after a year as it has held up very well.

What kind of clear coat did you use?

Very nice work. Spray cans can be great, especially the nice ones you can get at most paint shops. I've seen really good jobs with paint rollers as well, but that requires a TON of sanding.
