Question RE: changing ECM's and chipped keys
 

I purchased a 01 GLE with a shorted out IACV and ECM. Bought one from a member on here and waiting for it to ship out. He is sending out one of the keys from his car along with it. Would I simply be able to remove the chip from his key and put it into mine and start the car, or would I still have to take it to Nissan to program it? Has anybody tried this before?

Just to warn u, if the iacv and ecm were shorted out, its most likely because of the front electric motor mount, so disconnect that or replace it before you connect ur new ecm and iacv or they'll fry instantly.

Now about the chip, its sorta integrated into the plastic part of the key like it was put there then the plastic was molded around it. So you could remove it with a dremel tool grinding the plastic around till u start seeing a small crystal but you gotta be careful not to break it. You'll end up with a frankenstein key. Your probably better off paying a locksmith to make your key pattern and programming it

Already read up on the motor mounts and they have been disconnected. Just wondering on the key thing right now.

While probably not the most desirable solution you could always secure the key behind the steering wheel area. The NATs antenna will pick it up and you can use your regular key to start it. Never tried it myself but I've heard of a few 4th gen people doing it.

Will try that and see how it goes!

For anyone else wondering about this, I tried swapping the chips in the keys but it would not start for some reason. Looks like I will be driving my car somewhere, swapping the ECU's in the parking lot and have them program it there. Dealer wants $55 apparently but have to book it ~1 week in advance, local locksmiths want $140-$150 to do it.

I tried the key behind the NATs and I had no luck on my 5th gen. I had a key made and programmed for $200. This was after my ignition cylinder seized / locked up and I couldn't get my car started anymore because my key wouldn't work. You don't want to immobilize your car completely so I would recommend going by the dealer / locksmith.
