Going to begin to weed out the Sticky's

Any suggestions or feedback, post here. Let's keep it concise and to the point.

Points I'd like to make.

1.) There a lot of dead threads/links. But, it be nice to still be able to retain a lot of what is in the sticky's, if it is indeed useful. One item to note is that, the How To or otherwise useful info/pictures may be gone for good, so we wont spend too much time on those and just get rid of them if we can't find them, i.e the link takes us to some bizarre place, and the "oldthread" method doesn't work.

2.) There are a TON of new modifications/how to's/maintenance items that have come to light in the past few years and I'd like to capture them and, if need be, clean up the thread(s) the info is in.

If you guys could give a helping hand, that be great. irish tried this so some success, and I;d like to do the same so we can make our sticky's actually useful again. I know their format is not very intuitive either, since some threads has links to mods and another threads has how to's to certain mods, etc. Plan on tidying that up too. I have a template with all the links in the sticky (with the green bold lettering from Y2KevSe) that I had began working on, but never really finished.

Any help is appreciated in finding cool stuff you'd like to be added, or otherwise think is useful.

Whoever runs the 4th gen section should do the same imho... soo much cluttered non pictured threads there and same goes for us 4th gens.. alot of new things in past couple years ;)

Geez. Why take out the trash? Why put dishes away in the same place and have them organized? Why not keep your old oil in your car?

This type of spring cleaning is fantastic to organize the decades of experience. To make references for new and old members alike more accessable and connected. To eliminate garbage resulted from dead links, dead websites, and deleted images which the posts that contain them are obviously of no further help and clog the arteries of the forum.

OP: I think you're on the right track. What you've mentioned would make all the difference in the world. Maybe retitle some of the threads to clarify contents?
It all sounds daunting to me. I respect your effort and taking this task on! Thank you!!

Amerikaner83 Jan 30, 2013 06:47 PM

this should be a sticky...

:hide:

MrEous Jan 30, 2013 07:37 PM

IMO...the Org needs to step up and have a dedicated section to house important posts/how-tos. Like a wiki of sorts.

george__ Jan 30, 2013 07:42 PM

^
I only mention because lot of links are missing pictures... So it would be a lot of work for the OP...

Chris Gregg Jan 30, 2013 08:07 PM

Yup, agreed. So, I suggest we all pitch in and buy him a case of beer of his choice. That kinda stuff goes a long way in this forum!! :)

You Da mang, mang.

Daunting is right, any little bit helps. I'm not sure how humble linking any of my threads is, so I might not do that, but if this thread stays active enough to remind me at a time when time permits, I'll try to help

ShocknAwe Jan 30, 2013 08:31 PM

Anything you do will help. Dead links is the biggest problem IMO. Down to pitch in for non alcoholic beer as payment

TunerMaxima3000 Jan 30, 2013 08:37 PM

I just realized I have my very own post in the how to stickies that I didn't even know about, flattering, and lol'd at the fuel mileage calculation remember you saying you would sticky that didn't think you were serious Lmaoo.
Also goes to show I haven't looked at the stickies in over a year

TunerMaxima3000 Jan 30, 2013 08:43 PM

http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...fications.html

This is the template you plan to use right? If so I agree, toss the how to, etc all into this thread

This may have some incorrect info, and is a bit sloppy, but there are some not easy to find answers in there that should be stickied

Sorry for links I'm on mobile dude I'll fix later if they don't work without copy paste

EDIT: Links repaired

theres alot of members on here that would appreciate it plus it seems like most of the members are 4th and 5th gen owners.
+ as a car gets older thats when they start to get modified more often cause its ussually younger crowd who like to modify but they cant afford to buy brand new and also if they did have the money it can void warrantys.

Because the stickys are much more valuable to a car that is 13 years old than to a new car. You get that right?

One suggestion I would make on the stickys is that where you find a dead link/no pics/etc., that you retain the subject so that someone else who does that particular job could create a new how to.

You might do that by simply keeping a list of the stickys/how to's that you delete and putting them in a separate sticky called "new how to's needed" or in a sub portion of the how to sticky.

that way, if someone does the job or knows the location of a how to, it can be added easily.

TunerMaxima3000 Jan 31, 2013 07:33 AM

http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...rt-thread.html

The no-start threads pop up regularly, this has a decent walk through for diagnosis
Also there's the suspension question thread that djfrestyl did up.

http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...on-thread.html

Not sure where to stuff those threads links, though.

Amerikaner83 Jan 31, 2013 10:08 AM

can we get a recent LED type thread stickied? LEDs now and LEDs from back in 2006 are not at all teh same anymore. I recommend the "plug and play 5.5 gen" and tuner's "5th gen feeler with poll" threads

Yeah and if are lucky enough to be able to seek the thread address out, we can do the old method of replacing showthread with oldthread. But if the link is directly to a post (post#123) then we might be hosed.

Yep, sounds like a plan to me. I'll add circa @ 2006 or something like that to it.

In Kevlo's defense, he actually gave me this idea when he cleaned them up not too long ago.

Because we can and want to.

fat_kid Jan 31, 2013 11:37 AM

Consolidate the stickies, lots of overlap between how tos, DIY, and mods

easier access for procedure for reseting ecu and checking the CEL

Dust N Bones Jan 31, 2013 04:52 PM

I actually just got back into a 5.5 gen a few months ago after a few years away and I immediately went to the sticky's to search for a few things only to find out a huge majority of the links no longer work. It's a shame because even though they are old threads there is still a potential ton of great info there. If only someone had thought to save them back when the "oldthread" trick still worked. I'm not very creative so I doubt I'd be much help but I wish you luck and if someone can pull off organizing all that old stuff and saving some of it that would be awesome.

NmexMAX Mar 27, 2013 07:38 AM

Any other suggestions?

1.) Weed them out, I see tons of overlap. I'll go through them and see which ones are live and dead, and I'm just going to delete the invalid ones with dead links. If people have heartburn over that, feel free to find an updated thread with the same information and post it here, or PM it to me.

2.) Consolidation/Organization. I can see where modifications and maintenance items can interfere. So I think separating these into 2 categories will be best, let me know what you think. Same goes for TSB's and such.

3.) To add to #2, I think a General Info Sticky, as we sort of already have, would be nice to provide general information, such as models, options, colors, etc.

Let me know what everyone thinks.

Chris Gregg Mar 27, 2013 07:44 AM

Seems to sum it up to me.

Amerikaner83 Mar 27, 2013 07:46 AM

agreed.

If you guys need my help, LMK.

JWatZ Mar 27, 2013 08:08 AM

I'm coming up on a week off of work. I will gladly go through some of these and find the dead ones, or the ones like this: Click Flush A/T and it takes you here http://forums.maxima.org/advanced-su...ml#post3560327 Just assign people sections that are willing to drudge through.

I'm all about helping make these more user-friendly. Just let me know what I can help with.

NmexMAX Mar 27, 2013 08:51 AM

That's a result of the overhaul the org went through a few years back.

Add this:

http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...00-2003-a.html

To Exhaust 'section' here:

http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...fications.html

One suggestion stolen from the way Gdriver does it, is to substitute the
"I'M NEW HERE BUT HAVE A QUESTION THREAD"
for something a bit more inviting to all members, and kept 'flame-free' as much as possible
"RANDOM LITTLE QUESTION THREAD"

Same thread different name. maybe a pointless/silly suggestion, dunno.

Thanks again for your efforts!

FastnFuriousMax Mar 27, 2013 11:21 AM

Why not just make a Wiki and have everything forever?

That way all forums can contribute.

Good idea ... and, you think it should remain a sticky? Remember at one point it was now, and was often overlooked ...

Hopefully once the stickys get sorted out, there will be less, so seeing the top of the page wont be so hard and we wont be so immune to it.

TunerMaxima3000 Mar 27, 2013 12:27 PM

I'd keep it as a sticky. The last part of your post is I think the biggest contributor. There's a lot to read there.

Is there a way to put a couple posts in a separate 'box' just above the stickies? Kind of like the general discussion page is split up with different 'boxes' for sub-forums, etc?

Some of the threads that you want to 'jump out and bite newcomers' Stickies can go there (maximum of 3 stickies) and the main Modifications, FAQ, General 5th gen Info, etc can go in the normal sticky area.

Even when you break it all down and organize it, that's still quite a few stickies, more than 5 is a lot, and will get overlooked, IMO
There's freaking 11 there now. I NEVER LOOK AT THE STICKIES. And when I DO need to find something I know is in there, I have to try 3-4 of them to find it.

Also perhaps a few senior, or more active members could have the thread linked in their Sig's so newcomers see it in threads also.

Have a quick question? Post it here!! ====>>> "RANDOM LITTLE QUESTION THREAD"
