Will someone please show me how to take an effing A/C clutch off? I pulled the screw and it wouldnt come off by hand, so I tried a puller. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I need to replace the bearing. Its an '00 with a Calsonic compressor. Thanks.

Doesn't it require a special tool b/c the douche bags at nissan want you to buy a new compressor?

I bought a re-manned compressor on ebay for my 97 for $123 shipped...for what it's worth.

Here is a link to the seller if you want to price out a re-manned one

U can buy a used compressor for $50 on ebay or car-parts.com. i would never try to just replace a piece of an assembly like that unless its a life or death situation.

nsnrider May 24, 2013 07:42 PM

the point of replacing the bearing instead of the whole assembly is:

1) saves time (by not having to remove the assembly of the car)

2) saves money (labor cost and the cost of refrigerant)

You will need a special tool to pull the clutch of the compressor. When I tried before, the autozone a/c clutch tools didn't work for me.

Maybe someone chimes in with the correct tool part #.

Yea no **** id like to know myself past 3 maximas i had made horribles noises with ac on! last one sounded like it was gonna come apart one day n next day went to normal grind noise for 30k miles never locked up lol.

I actually did this to my '99 a few years ago. Sounded like a crowbar was dragging underneath my car when I cut the AC on. I actually did use the clutch puller kit I rented from autozone, along with a buttload of PB Blaster, a set of prybars, and a rubber mallet. The puller didn't fit supper snuggly, but I was able to do it by attaching it and pushing on the gap with my foot and a prybar to make it fit snug. That eventually broke the rust. Then used prybars to snatch it the rest of the way since it was trash anyway. PITA, but beats changing the whole thing. Got a compressor off ebay for $80. Took the clutch and bearing, good as new. And very minmal refrigerant loss... But yeah, it can be done. Just expect it to take some effort if it's pretty rusted

Ya, the POS puller messed my pulley up. And it's still not off. Gotta decide what I'm gonna do now. Buy a reman compressor or the proper tool and a new pulley.

cjandura May 25, 2013 02:12 PM

You pulled the clutch assembly off first right?

atomztwins May 25, 2013 06:19 PM

Umm, no. See title of this thread. I obviously have no clue what I was doing. And I've worked on cars since I was a kid. AC clutch is just one thing I've never messed with before

Well If you can't pry it off, then I guess get the remanned. But like I said, I pryed mines off. Bent it all up, snatching wildy. People looking at me like I was some sort of theif... Took a little elbow grease, but if it's trash it doesn't matter if you bend it up. Just the hassle of having to catch the refrigerant. Then having to have the system purged and refilled and all that wasn't worth it. Though the compressor drops easy, 4 bolts and done. I still vote to get a prybar set and wild out though, lol
