Burnt smell through vent
What can cause a burnt smell coming through the vent everytime I turn on the heater on these Maximas? Where can I look to see this problem?
|
What kind of smell is it? Is it oil, is it wire insulation, is it electrical component?
You have to be more descriptive. |

I would pull out the cabin air filter (located behind the glovebox) and see if there's anything obstructing that got sucked into the blower motor. Leaves and/or mice can get in there
Here's a how to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WgA8IYcaxU |

I really don't know what kind of smell but it smells like plastic. Maybe oil? I heard it can be anti freeze/coolant. But it only smells like for 3 mins and then goes away. I do hear the motor loud when I turn it on and it also goes away. It does come back when I hit bumps vice versa.

I keep my car in the garage and I do know how dead rats smell like so I'm sure it ain't that.

Blower motor is shot. Can use 4th or 5th gen motor.

So it's not the blower motor? |
coolant smell could be coming from a faulty heater core...blower is just blowing the air carrying smells exchanged in the heater core. that could be the stem of your problems. my best guess.

coolant doesn't smell burnt :|

So what's that burning smell? Blower motor? If it is, it be better than replacing heater core. Someone pls tell me it's the motor.

You know what you might be right.Maybe that's why I still have oil consumption. I had the oil pan replace but I don't think that solved the issue. Which gaskets did you replace? Did you do it yourself?

Reviving an old thread here: I’m having a similar issue. In my case, it smells like burning rubber. Only when the blower is on. I’ve checked my engine bay and have not found any foriegn objects that may have been stuck in there. Another important thing to note is that you can smell the exact same smell from outside the car, even stronger. My coolant level is steady, so I don’t think it’s that. My rear valve cover is pretty wet, but that’s the only leak. But it doesn’t smell like oil. Sometimes it smells, sometimes not. But you can always smell it outside after the car has been running. I’m thinking cat or something? Just wanted to get ideas |
Since you can smell it outside the car, that is probably where it is originating at. Check along the exhaust pipes for something touching them, from the exhaust manifolds and back. A catalytic converter that is plugging will smell, but that is rather distinctive, something like rotten eggs which is sulfur dioxide.

I’ll do some nosing around and see what I can find. My blower motor resistor blew, so I pulled it out. But the smell was there before the resistor blew. |
Took a look around, didn’t find anything. However, the rear VC is more wet than I remember, so it could very well be from that. |
