Burnt smell through vent

What can cause a burnt smell coming through the vent everytime I turn on the heater on these Maximas? Where can I look to see this problem?

DennisMik 11-12-2014 05:57 PM

What kind of smell is it? Is it oil, is it wire insulation, is it electrical component?

You have to be more descriptive.

Given the description you have given, I would open the hood and remove the neighbors cat remains that was using your engine heat over night ... this may help in reducing that burnt smell every time you start up the engine.

I would pull out the cabin air filter (located behind the glovebox) and see if there's anything obstructing that got sucked into the blower motor. Leaves and/or mice can get in there

Here's a how to video:

I really don't know what kind of smell but it smells like plastic. Maybe oil? I heard it can be anti freeze/coolant. But it only smells like for 3 mins and then goes away. I do hear the motor loud when I turn it on and it also goes away. It does come back when I hit bumps vice versa.

I keep my car in the garage and I do know how dead rats smell like so I'm sure it ain't that.

Blower motor is shot. Can use 4th or 5th gen motor.

So it's not the blower motor?

Have you pulled the cabin filter and got the stuff out of there?

coolant smell could be coming from a faulty heater core...blower is just blowing the air carrying smells exchanged in the heater core. that could be the stem of your problems. my best guess.

So it's not the blower motor? Should i just replace both the heater core and blower motor? Heater core for the smell? And blower motor for the sound? Now I'm not getting the right speed of the heat. What if I fix the heater core but not the blower motor.

Child_uv_KoRn 11-16-2014 01:52 PM

coolant doesn't smell burnt :|

egali045 11-16-2014 09:11 PM

So what's that burning smell? Blower motor? If it is, it be better than replacing heater core. Someone pls tell me it's the motor.

No I have not. What should I expect from the cabin filter?

Could be oil.....i had that issue for a while before i too my lazy behind under the hood to check. Gaskets were leaking. Smelled burnt every time i turned on the AC

You know what you might be right.Maybe that's why I still have oil consumption. I had the oil pan replace but I don't think that solved the issue. Which gaskets did you replace? Did you do it yourself?

Might be the rear valve cover gasket. I'm have the same burned smell issue, but it def smells like oil in my case.

Reviving an old thread here:

I’m having a similar issue. In my case, it smells like burning rubber. Only when the blower is on. I’ve checked my engine bay and have not found any foriegn objects that may have been stuck in there. Another important thing to note is that you can smell the exact same smell from outside the car, even stronger.

My coolant level is steady, so I don’t think it’s that. My rear valve cover is pretty wet, but that’s the only leak. But it doesn’t smell like oil.

Sometimes it smells, sometimes not. But you can always smell it outside after the car has been running. I’m thinking cat or something? Just wanted to get ideas

DennisMik 02-05-2018 09:43 AM

Since you can smell it outside the car, that is probably where it is originating at. Check along the exhaust pipes for something touching them, from the exhaust manifolds and back. A catalytic converter that is plugging will smell, but that is rather distinctive, something like rotten eggs which is sulfur dioxide.

SubwayVQ 02-05-2018 04:11 PM

I’ll do some nosing around and see what I can find. My blower motor resistor blew, so I pulled it out. But the smell was there before the resistor blew.

SubwayVQ 02-06-2018 02:57 PM

Took a look around, didn’t find anything. However, the rear VC is more wet than I remember, so it could very well be from that.

Your blower motor is about to go out. Had the same problem it is either the blower motor or the fan amp controller. But during smell is def most likely from there.
