01 Maxima shifting problem

Today I went in my car started it up and when I put the car in reverse the cluster on the dash still said it was in park even tho I put the shifter was in reverse I tried reversing and the was still in park. I tried shifting to N,D,1,2 and the car was still in Park the shifter feels like something is disconnected. The only way I was able to put the car in drive was to manually do it by hand under the hood.

There is a shift interlock mechanism, and a cable of the same name, that prevents you from shifting (P -> D/R) without stepping on the brake at the same time. It looks like your interlock cable slipped out of its holder and is hanging loose. This problem shouldn't be too difficult to fix, but you need to see the schematics. See the FSM, pages AT-270 to AT-279.
