question about cruise control

any of you guys know anything about using cruise control on the highways,,while cruising at at average of 70 mph coming down a hilly road ,,the car holds back like it will not go over 70 mph ,,is it using the braking system to slow the car to 70 or is it wearing down on the brakes,,what slows that car down to avoid it to exceed the 70 mph ,,,disabling the cruise control while car is going downhill the speed will increase due to gravity and u need to manually brake the car or disable the overdrive,,,but in cruise control how does the car maintain in a steady 70 mph going downhill

The cruise control does not have any connections to the braking system. It slows the car by backing off on the gas pedal. It's been a while sine I've driven in a hilly area, but I'm pretty sure my car will speed up on a downhill slope when I'm using cruise control.
