Oil Consumption

Hello guys,
just picked up an '02 6 speed SE.
Over on another forum some guys about the pre-cat right off the manifold
losing it's integrity and part of the item somehow getting back into the engine and damaging piston rings .
Car currently has 85k miles, and upon start-up no indication of worn out rings.
Car pulls hard as well. Second day owning it,so I'll see .
Was a cali car as well to note.
Any experiences?

Welcome to the wonderful & exciting world of VQ35s. Search and you'll find a plethora of information about oil burning.

If I were you, id get rid of the precats now before it has a chance to do damage. 85k.. very young

That's what I was told. Happen to know what mileage they start to rot?

That depends on where it was driven. No rust on my car - it spent all its life in California.

I have oil consumption issues as well. The engine and precats are NEW. WTF is going on?

Might be another issues. Check your PCV valve

Was a Bay Area car as a matter of fact. I found the obx headers on a site for 425.
Cheaper than high flow cats.

I bet your engine is not new ..... perhaps a "new used" ... ?
At any rate, re. "what's going on?" - search this forum as suggested in post #2; there is a ton of info on this subject.

Remanufactured close enough to new

Prophecy99 04-10-2017 09:52 AM

engines burn oil, guys with no cats early on (like OP can do if they remove them) still have burning oil...

so to any one don't always put oil burning and precats together....

Reman'ing an engine (properly) requires an expert, which most shops aren't. This is why most of the time you're better off going with a low mileage used motor.

THat is tru! my 4th gen used oil also and had to change it more frequenly as the miles got over 250k, every 3k miles had to change the oil or the motor would rattle. There are a number of places where oil can leak on the vg35.

There's a huge difference between valve stem seal burning and precat caused burning. One will use, say, a qt every 3k (highly driver dependant). The other will eat a quart every 1k and continue to accelerate, whereas the stem seal amount remains constant.

Poor oil changes are an exclusion as most cars receive terrible maintenance (the biggest downfall of well used cars). VQ30s don't use oil at all if properly maintained (ever see 10k OCI with no loss? I have lol).

that makes sense ! i think its just the word oil burning scares a lot of people... and they start thinking extremes it gets people nutty ripping out cats ! haha

i am 1k every between every oil change, and it literally is at the last 3rd of the interval, i have some theory the dirtier it gets the easier it burns. ( i removed and gutted precats (100% intact) at 184k)

when I had running problems my car ran super rich all the time and was diluting the oil with gas, 600 miles and oil was black and burning 1qt every 2k. Crank case smelled like a gas tank. After fixing my maf, coils, plugs, and o2 sensors, I now have a steady .4-5 quarts lost every about 4k miles but it's 99% city mileage.

Agreed to an extent. Thing is, better to prevent than live with the consequences. Kinda like saving money for a rainy day.

Besides,I was going to install headers anyways, open that baby up.

I could imagine. Just got under the car right now, doesn't look fun.
I'll probably let a shop do it too.
