Broken nipple on VIAS vacuum tank

I was in the middle of replacing my rotted VIAS vacuum lines when one of the nipples on the vacuum tank crumbled off. Naturally, there was a hissing noise at idle from the air leak at the hole. To get around that, I removed the line at the main IM nipple and put one of those caps on from NAPA. Now the tank has no vacuum going to it, so the VIAS system no longer works...(?)

Now there's no more hissing at idle but when I accelerate hard from a light, I hear some hisses which then vanish. Since the tank no longer has any vacuum going to it, what is hissing? The IM nipple cap is on tight. No codes and car drives fine otherwise.

I just bit the bullet and got a new vacuum tank for $45 from the stealership. The parts guy held the tank all confused and asked me what car it was for. I told him for my 02 I35 and he was surprised these were still on the road. I was like you better believe it dawg
