Intake boot options.

I've been trying to resolve a p0507 high idle error code for a while. IMG and plugs were replaced a year ago before this problem appeared. Since the problem has appeared replaced the PCV and most of the vacuum hoses. Cleaned TB and MAF. Performed the idle relearn procedure over and over. Flashes as it should, idle goes down. But its not long before the high idle returns. The brakes are good. No change in idle when I step on the brakes. So i think the booster hoses are ok. I see something here, maybe its the cause? Its cracked, but I'm not sure its through. The price of replacing this boot is close to a cheap eBay CAI. Other years are cheaper. the late 90's version of this boot is $10. I'm wondering if there is an interchange for this part, or other options.

duct tape

pedal dance reset and use car gauge pro to set idle if need be

I bought one on ebay for $9 worked and fit perfect

I don't think it will get any better than that. If 3" ID would work I'd give you a silicone coupler for shipping cost but they're red. The ebay deal looks best.

Thanks. I thought the older ones were too small diameter for an 03

rodent_infested_03 12-19-2018 02:54 PM

Is this a dumb idea? Will it cause more problems than it solves? Its so cheap I could get rid of the entire crumbling stock air box.

I think you would have to move your battery sideways for that. This is for 04+ Max

This shows you how to relocate the battery to run this intake. Probably more work than you want:

They are if made the correct size. 60 vs 70mm TB.

I did some searching on here and found years of CAI and short ram posts. So I have a good idea of what's needed if I change over. I may just install the boot and move on to a more pressing issue. I replaced the pcv valve trying to resolve the p0507 and found a lot of blowby and oil fouling intake, throttle body. I had the intake off down to the lower intake in July. So I was surprised to see buildup so fast. The pcv valve did appear to be weak.

Wondering how many are using a pcv catch can and if its worthwhile.

Delete PCV.

el cheapos on amazon directly on drilled out PCV. It'll make a little mess over time (pretty negligible on a fresh engine), but you could run em to a catch can. Or run hoses down along the chassis to keep the oil down there. Or run a catch can with vac hooked up (in that case I let it suck fresh air from driver's bank VC through to catch can then IM).

Cheapo can that I use https://www.ebay.com/itm/Oil-Catch-R...58d:rk:15:pf:0 Anything cheap doesn't have a real baffle and material inside to condensate the oil, but this one does have a small, removable baffle. I fill it with steel wool (kinda like cut to fit as best as possible). It works really well. You could use it for either method. I filled it up in about 1k on my G35 lol

The inlet side is the baffle, so it hits the wool and drips down. To give you an idea of how well it works, I just checked the outlet hose on my G. It's dry inside.

To straight vent on this one you'd want to Y them together and use the other side as inlet and plug the baffle port. Or plug one VC (since it can still use the hose connecting them).

Good luck actually mounting it, but it's cheap, so whatever. The other cheapos with the stupid sight on the side will leak, so don't bother with that crap.

i wish i knew more about PCV deleting crap =)

To confirm you have completely removed or gutted the PCV valve? Using your catch can/breather as example.. The actual delete is blocking the port on the intake manifold and blocking one of 2 ports on the catch can which leaves a one-way vent through the catch can and out the breather?

Yeah. There's definitely better cans, but they're a lot more expensive.

I thought vacuum from the intake was used to draw fresh air which lessens carbon deposits and oil contamination. If I disconnect from the intake, I will still get circulation?

It's for emissions. Normal OCIs aren't going to go long enough for blowby contamination to matter.
Right, no flow if deleted. Cars used to just have a tube dump at the bottom the engine, which is why you may remember black streaks in the middle of the road.

This is the best simple explanation I've ever seen for how to do it and why.

I foresee me making money in the future once all the DI engines have misfires from stupid PCV. Shops are gonna say 1k for cleaning lol

Only nissan and toyota are building them correctly (use port and DI).

thanks man def a good read, and saved, now on to understanding Child_uv_KoRn's input on PCV deletion which seems more legit , solid, long term.

rodent_infested_03 12-21-2018 11:39 AM

I've never had any buildup in front of the plates, but after reading the pdf I checked the intake hose to confirm there was no reverse venting. Mostly dry. Pulled the PCV valve and noticed it rattled, but had no strength. So I changed it.

Decided to fix what I know is broke first. Buy the OEM boot, add add a catch can that connects normally to PCV. Pedal dance, hopefully the p0507 stays gone. Once the car has no codes, then play around with it. Anybody using this catch can? Thousands sold, reviews good. https://www.ebay.com/itm/BILLET-ALUM...75.c100623.m-1

rodent_infested_03 12-21-2018 12:03 PM

Forgot about this. Found it when i replaced the intake manifold upper and lower gaskets past year. Its located next to the PCV crossover tube passenger side front. I think its ok, being over the edge of the gasket. But I slathered some clear RTV over the crack and bolt just in case.

rodent_infested_03 12-29-2018 10:36 AM

Thanks for the help everyone. The idle relearn kept the P0507 away long enough to get the new OEM boot. Old one had a hole. Also, oil consumption is less since installing the new PCV valve. Hasn't used any oil in 300 miles. Usually about 1 qt per 1k.

Just yesterday I found the boot in mine had a massive tear, but I couldn't find an affordable replacement online. Being an electrician, my solution was half a roll of green electrical tape wrapped around ten + times. Good as... well, fixed anyway.

rodent_infested_03 12-29-2018 01:32 PM

I paid $49 with free shipping off eBay. If you look at my pic, no way tape would stop that leak for long the way it moves around.
