VIN Guide

I know that someone here posted before the site crash the way to determine what all the numbers in the VIN indicate. Can I get some feedback? :mardi:

Saweet! :doublethu

However, I discovered this does not cover 04 and up! any Ideas?

Even though not shown in the above link, the 10th digit of the 17-digit VIN denotes the model year.

All 2004 models have a '4' in the 10th digit.

And 2005 models have a '5' in the 10th digit.

A 2005 VIN here

Does anyone know how Nissan increments the serial#? I can't imagine they do it one number at a time. also any way to know day of the week the car was made by the vin?

lightonthehill Dec 6, 2004 11:43 PM

The VIN serial #s are incremented one digit at a time, and built pretty much in numerical order. Over one hundred and thirty one thousand '04 Maximas were built in eighteen months (Jan '03 - Jul '04), with serial numbers running from 800000 to around 931700.

Assembly of '05 Maximas began around the first of August of '04, also at VIN serial # 800000, and will go up at at rate somewhere around 7,000 to 8,000 a month.

Only Nissan could tell you the day of the week your car was built via the VIN serial #.

why would they start over with the 800000 vin numbers with the 05 Maxima's?

lightonthehill Dec 7, 2004 11:00 PM

MaxMus - You would have to submit that question to the hierarchy at Nissan headquarters. I would imagine their answer would be somewhat along the line of 'why not?'.

The reality is that the VIN serial numbers of any model year have no connection or relation whatsoever to the VIN serial numbers of any other model year, So they can start at the the number of their whim.

I've noticed most manufacturers start all VIN serial series at one of the hundred thousand points. That way, it is easy for them to note the VIN serial number coming off the assembly line at any time and know exactly how many have been built.

Like you, I have always wondered exactly what day of the week my Maximas have been built. I probably shouldn't say what I am going to say now, but take it for what its worth:

At the very bottom right margin of the big window sticker that was on the left rear window when I bought my car, in very fine print (I need a magnifying glass to read it) is a long series of numbers and letters. After the first few letters, my window sticker has this sequence - '20040529'.

I already knew my SL was built the last week of May, and realize those numbers represent either the assembly date or some sort of billing or lading date that immediately follows the assembly process. As a result, I consider my SL to have been built Saturday, May 29th, 2004, which was on the Memorial Day weekend. And yes, assembly lines would probably be running that day.

As I say, take that for what it is worth.

at the bottom of the rear bumper between the dual-tip exhausts, there is an inspection sticker stating when your Maxima got inspected. Then off they go onto trucks, trains, etc for deliveries to your local dealers.

it generally takes 10 business days to build these awesome machines from this inspection date.
