I think its just a characteristic of the car. I think it just has a hard shifting transmission.

I have 16k on my 04 and mine still does the same thing with no problems.

sounds like you need to baby your car before you try running too hard...wait til you have at least spent the gas that the dealer put in it. I think it's just a characteristic of the car.

jonnie - as I told you on a post a day or two ago, Nissan says you are not supposed to be over 4K rpm the first 1200 miles. I could understand maybe fudging a little at around 1000 miles, or maybe touching 5K rpm a time or two. But 6K and 7K at 300?

You may be sadly disappointed when you go to your dealer for warranty work and he checks the onboard recorder and sees what a VERY BAD boy you have been. But then if you have $7K or $8K laying around you don't mind spending for a new engine, then have at it.

It is because of out-of-control folks like you that Nissan actually has controls in the Maxima to try to keep you from redlining the car until it is broken in. You may be running into some of those controls, which may be causing your unusual performance.

The Maxima is a very fine automobile with a great engine. But any mechanical equipment, no matter how well-built, can be destroyed by senseless abuse.

I don't mean to be critical, and I appreciate that you love the Maxima. But several posters here the last few days have been hinting for you to go easy during breakin, and it seems you ignored them completely.

If you love your Maxima, please show it respect. If you respect your Maxima, it (and posters here) will return that respect.

I agree with the earlier comments on this thread about high RPMs early in the Max's life, particularly those by lightonthehill.

To answer this specific question:

Nissan (in the 2004 Product Guide) claims this engine produces 265 HP @ 5,800 RPM and 255 ft-lbs or Torqur @ 4400 RPM.

You are probably feeling the torque more than the HP.

I've not seen a graph of the HP and Torque for this specific engine, but I have an SAE technical paper by Nissan from March of 2002 where they are discussing their "Third Generation of High Output and High Response 3.5 L V-6 Engine." In this paper, "Fig 1 shows the torque curve of the new VQ35 engine compared with that of the previous VQ35 . . ." This graph also has the upper RPM graph of the HP output. The Torque units are metric and hard to read specifically on the graph. The paper quotes this 2002 engine's max torque at 362 Nm @ 4,800 RPM and max HP of 216 KW at 6,000 RPM. (All Metric measures.)

So you can see that without doing a conversion, it is hard to make a detailed comparison with our 2004 VQ35 engines. What is most informative about the torque graph is how flat the new engine's torque is between about 3,800 RPM and 5,600 RPM. The HP curve is above 200 KW from about 5,500 RPM to the end of the graph at 6,400 RPM.

Hope this helps you better understand the performance characteristics of your Max's 3.5 L.

A final comment: You are possibly correct that the HP at 5K RPM is about the same as at 7K RPM (even though the graph does not go that high). The HP peaks at between 5,800 and 6,000 RPM.
