Maxi's chrome mouldings gone dull...

Somehow, the mouldings on the roof only have gone dull on Maxi...

Cant explain how.... youd think both roof and back windsheild would go dull but this is just the roof...strange....

http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/824467/4

Called the dealer let him know how annoying this is... taking her in on thursday (wont settle for a repair or polish - only replacment).

Tek-Niq May 10, 2005 02:49 PM

some of us had this prob... you will have to take it to the dealer and get them taken out and replaced with the 2005 max ones.... somehow it gets moisture in there and dulls it..

**** warning **** the if dealer doesn't know how to do it they can crack the windshield.... this is very hard to do.. they can also bend the trim while putting it on and you will have to go back again...

if you do this be ready for the worst and after install check for cracks on the windshield.. take it from experiece...

HzMajesty May 10, 2005 02:59 PM

thanks for the tips!
i still think staff trainning is weak in Nissan.. not as knowledgable as ud hope them to be...

Tek-Niq May 10, 2005 03:07 PM

I hear ya..... just look out for this before you walk away so you can point it out right on the spot..

I had to go to the dealer 4 times and i'm waiting for my 5th time because of this...

Yep, mine is doing the same. Am waiting until I get a new assignment and will replace them at a different dealer. Only the roof ones on mine, both sides. All faded and hazed.
:mecry:

Yep, I have to get mine fixed. Wonder if the replacements will do the same thing though. I have a feeling they might. Funny thing is that it is only the 2 roof ones.

Tek-Niq May 10, 2005 04:09 PM

nah i don't think they would... these are the 2005 max ones they replaced them with and look more together than the 04 ones that dull...

I know what you mean, I replaced the roof ones also not the rear ones by the windshield..

HzMajesty May 10, 2005 04:52 PM

seems quite a few of us had this problem..

is it covered under warranty??

brewboy13 May 11, 2005 08:23 PM

Thanks for posting this one guys I just thought it was my problem to deal with. Mine is in the shop as we speak with many problems I will ask them about this issue tomorrow. It does look pretty cheezy! This is why I love this site.

HzMajesty May 12, 2005 08:26 AM

Update:

Dropped her of at 9:00am... they finished at 11:00am.

Both roof mouldings replaced with new ones under warranty, no charges.

EDIT: Check windsheild for cracks or scratches - none found - thanks for this tip!

DULL Chrome

I seem to be experiencing the same problem but noticed something funny.

There appears to be clear film over the top of these pieces which is starting to bubble and peel.

Initially I thought it was a protective film applied at the factory that the dealer had forgot to remove. It even looks as though they attempted to remove it.

Is there any chance they ship these cars with a clear film on this trim?

Thank you

04WHITESE

chernmax May 12, 2005 09:52 AM

Car covers or putting in a garage (if you have one) may help lesson the problem. Direct sunlight no matter where you live will get the best of any paint or trim over time. Thanks for the post dudes, this will be something I keep an eye out for as well...

BudoTek May 12, 2005 10:08 AM

has anybody given a shot at changing the color on those mouldings? ive never liked the idea those shiny chrome moldings on my silver max. i've thought of maybe black but thats just me thinkin.

HzMajesty May 12, 2005 11:45 AM

Dealers explanation: The chorme mouldings come with a clear film over the mouldings. This film is removed by the dealer before sale. However, sometimes when this film is removed, it removes the protective coating over the chrome making it react with the elements and go dull.

Whoever has dull mouldings.. go get em change, its covered! :D

if you deside to change them, you won't be able to do it yourself..there are some special clips in there and they go under the front windshield and taking them on and off could crack it....

not a do it yourself job..

brewboy13 May 13, 2005 11:56 AM

Dealer is ordering mine today. Thanks guys I would have never thought of that as a warranty item!!!

HzMajesty May 15, 2005 07:18 PM

Here are the before and after pics... (bottom of page)

04BlackMaxx May 15, 2005 09:56 PM

Well, on mine there is a covering over the roof moldings, not the back and and front windshields..I think it was supposed to stay liek that because most cars I see have it that way. Right ramberg, gotta be the sun, mines garaged 75% of the time...no problems at all, and I live in a colder climate.

silvermaxSI Jul 5, 2005 07:36 AM

SLuxury Jul 5, 2005 03:39 PM

Had mine replaced under 36k warranty. They bent it in two places while installing and I had to go back for the 3rd one... but it got done.

silvermaxSI Jul 6, 2005 08:45 AM

ok so my dealer said its because the ones on the trunk are chrom plastic and the ones on the roof are stainless steel my dealership must really hate doing warranty work

bottom of the page, my before and after pictures...

tell the stealership that all maximas with this problem are being replaced under warrenty due to the removal of the protective coating from the mouldings when the plastic cover is ripped off.

NismoMax80 Jul 7, 2005 07:29 PM

mine are different shades too. but what can you do? replace and replace until 36k miles is up? then what? doesn't bother me much. does suck for perfectionists knowing they are different materials and nothing can be done.

so Hz, are you saying if a protective coating stays in-tact, they won'r discolor?

to tell u the truth, i think its just BS they tell their customers so they dont look stupid. The protective coating (if there is any), can not and will not come off when the blue protective film is taken off. But if thats what they wanna say to get them replaced, then thats what ill say everytime they change it till 36K =)

well you know there's a clear plastic coating that comes off too. I realized my passenger side was still on b/c I thought I had a diagonal scratch at the bottom, but it was the end of the plastic. so my salesman went super slow peeling it off. maybe they meant that, but it's supposed to come off.

Tek-Niq Jul 9, 2005 09:28 AM

there is a plastic coat on the old ones.... the new ones are stainless like the rear ones on the car now...

now was that bs by the dealer, or you know for sure? Looks like i'll be rolling over again for minor work.

I can post a pic if you want... they are exactly the same..... the new ones will not have the plastic on the like the old ones so the moisture won't get it and dull them out..

Tek-Niq Jul 9, 2005 11:24 AM

sorry I do not have before pics....

but, compare this to your chrome trim and if it don't look like that get it repaired...

bottom trim is the rear top is the roof/front one
http://tekniq.homelinux.net/images/chrome1.jpg

I put my hand in the way so you can see that they are the same, and shine the same.
http://tekniq.homelinux.net/images/chrome2.jpg

I use invisible glass and a micro fiber towel to clean them....

PERFORMANCE NISSAN IN DUARTE OFF THE 210 BEST PLACE I FOUND FOR SERVICE HAD MINE REPLACE 2 WEEKS AGO

kidd4l Apr 12, 2006 02:56 PM

Hi guys, I just noticed that mine is getting dull. I called the dealership and they said it is not covered in 36K warranty, it was covered in 12K for the outside trim (mine is 18K now), I've never heard that policy before. Should I go to another dealership? what do you guys said when you had yours replaced?
They give me a price for $75 each for the chrome piece and 85 for installation.

Thank you

Ronald
