Short Throw Shifter - can't get in reverse?

Got the Active Tuning Short Throw Shifter kit. Tonight, only had time to do the attachment under the shift knob (since I haven't yet learned how to remove the airbox on my new 6th gen.). Anyway, it was easy enough to attach, and I noticed a lot of improvement in the feel of shifting into the 6 forward gears, but it wouldn't go into reverse, which meant I couldn't get it out of the garage to drive it around. I put the shift knob back to stock.

So, my hope is that when I attach the second part under the hood (after learning to remove the airbox), then re-do the piece under the shift knob, all gears will work. Is that the case? I remember some folks said they attached only the piece under the shift knob, and were happy with that. If so, how did they get it into reverse?

I did take into account that maybe the power line for the cigarette lighter might be blocking the shifter from getting all the way over, but that wasn't the case. Tried it with the shift bezel lifted up so I could see if anything was blocking it.

You probably had the same problem as me, make sure that the shift knob is centered on the shaft. When I did mine it was slightly off and would not allow the mechinism raise to shift into reverse. The total install was easy, put both parts in though, it shortens up the shift for sure!!!

I could get the knob piece up and the shift shaft over to where reverse is supposed to be, and I could even hear the gear grinding when I let off the clutch. It just wouldn't go all the way into reverse. As you say, I'll do both parts this weekend and hope that fixes it.

Thanks for the quick reply!

As far as removing the stock airbox goes, it's easy as pie... I don't know if there's a sticky on it (but there should be), but when I replaced my intake it took no more than 10 minutes. You just unclip the top like you're changing the filter, take out the filter and start unbolting/unscrewing anything that might be securing it in place... :)

Seriously though... it's about as hard as getting into the shifter assembly... a couple of pulls and a bolt or two, and you're home free. If you can't find a sticky on it see if there's a set of instructions at Berk's (or a similar intake site) -- they should walk you over the process of removing the stock one.

Yeah, I put a JWT filter and a Frankencar mid-pipe in my 4th gen. I-30t, so I thought this 6th gen. shouldn't be too tough. Still, when I looked at it last night, I undid the clips that hold the air filter, and I could barely pull the top up enough to see the filter itself. The other side doesn't have clips. I was thinking of just disconnecting everything at the throttle body. Anyway, I'm going to wait until Saturday so I can take my time.

I did not even open the air box when I did mine, just took the 10mm bolt out at the fender and loosened the connection at the intake....didn't even disconnect the wiring just laid it aside. I did take the clips out in the front cover and air intake just so it would go back in easier........learned that from having to change the fog lights so much.... :jeffy:

Okay, now what's going on? I installed the piece under the hood (which was a *****), then the piece on the shift knob, and the thing wouldn't move at all!! Under the hood, there is a piece attached to the transmission that doesn't appear on the installation diagrams. That piece rubs right up against the head of the transmission cable once it's moved with the STS. That means you can't shift at all. Here's a pic:

Is that thing on yours? Mine is a 2005 with the six speed.

I will have to look in the morning on mine, I did not have any movement problems at all.

Ah I know, Porsches are sick...Im wishing and waiting...also wanna see that new M3, it might be as good of a performer for much less dough.

Looked this morning when I got up, mine has that same gold looking piece, but my cable is nowhere near as close as yours:scratch:.........just a question, where did you attach the cable to on the STS part?

Taxvictim Dec 18, 2005 11:47 AM

http://www.carylawoffice.com/images/install.jpgHere's the installation diagram. I think I installed it exactly this way. (Getting that tiny screw into the underside hole on the STS was a real effort!)

daves04smoke Dec 18, 2005 12:13 PM

Yea, that bottom screw is a PAIN for sure. That sure is strange, I have the Nissan racing STS but it is exactly the same as the active tuning one.....................hmmmmm

Taxvictim Dec 18, 2005 01:20 PM

I loosened that back screw and tried to move the STS piece around to get the cable head away from that gold piece, but to no avail. Anyway, I'm waiting for the guy at Active Tuning to respond to an email. If you have that extra part on your post, and it works, then I must have done something wrong.
