I made the first cut on each side. Second cut coming up. Im gonna cut the base and then file til its the same angle as the glass

MAXIMA-GHOST 03-09-2006 03:33 AM

hey dues, just a suggestion before you apply it.. you might want to think about sending it in somewhere(i.e.redline) to get a mold made, so others can get one too after its completed, instead of all the work that has to be dome.. i am actually liking the idea of that spoiler.. my wife owns a mazda3 with the spoiler, so i look at it alot.. keep us updated like you always do bro.. good luck... Later...

DeusExMaxima 03-09-2006 07:16 AM

Maxima-Ghost: Good idea. Hadnt fogured out how I was gonna have others make this other than showing how I made cuts and sanded things etc. I may need their help in finishing it because I need to mold the ends to the shape of the glass and the edge around the glass for a cleaner look. I took pics this morning of the spoiler taped to the glass after first two cuts. The general shape is about right. Now I need to shape it more and get some ABS plastic to glue to spoiler to conform to shape of glasss and glass-surround.::

By the way, the spoiler doesnt block rear vision AT ALL

DeusExMaxima 03-09-2006 07:17 AM

Oops I screwed up: Here they are for reals:

Masking tape?

DeusExMaxima 03-09-2006 05:03 PM

Tape was to hold spoiler in place for pics for YOU GUYS!

MAXIMA-GHOST 03-10-2006 04:58 PM

SWEET, bro.. I really like it, and it does look really good with that WRX spoiler.. I have been looking into getting one myself.. Does the WRK have a break light built in?

DeusExMaxima 03-10-2006 10:07 PM

Wait til I have it painted and the ends filled so that it blends in with the car. The WRX spoiler on the back does have LED brake lights. I was thinking about smoking that to blend it in with the rest of the car. I do have yet to hook it up though. Soon, I hope.

DeusExMaxima 03-10-2006 10:13 PM

Here are a couple more pics:

MAXIMA-GHOST 03-10-2006 11:15 PM

i think it bends really well with the cars natural lines.. My wife has hers and need to be replaced due to it having a deep scratch in it, so we have to get a new one anyways.. so either you can get some made (molded) or ill have to do this on my own... thanks for the Find though bro... later..

DeusExMaxima 03-10-2006 11:26 PM

It cost me $132 shipped unpainted/ Add another few bucks if u want it painted for ur wifes car. I still need to figure out how to finish the base and the ends.

DeusExMaxima 03-11-2006 05:48 PM

I bought some supplies from the hobby store: sheets of abs plastic, 2 part epoxy putty, metal mesh, two types of glue. I am going to use the sheets to make a base for the spoiler where it rests against the glass. I may try to heat it to curve it like the glass. Then I am going to make a mold of the general shape on the sides and front with the mesh. Then I m going to use the 2 part epoxy on top of the mesh to for the approximate shape to blend in the sides and front to the car. Then Ill sand the epoxy when it dries.

DeusExMaxima 03-11-2006 08:33 PM

The secret hand belongs to a lil Deus (my son Matt). Whats interesting about the spoiler is that from certain viewpoints, it looks like the Paradox spoiler, but the space between the spoiler and the window gives it a slightly more aggressive look. U see the space when u look at it from behind, or from the front/side. When its painted black, it will blend in even more as earlier pics indicate.

SoCalMax05 03-11-2006 08:50 PM

Are you working on it today - It's damn cold out here in the IE......

DeusExMaxima 03-11-2006 09:03 PM

Just took pics today. Didnt get above 40 today, brrrrrrr. I bought the stuff late today and too busy playing in a concert tomorrow, so maybe next week sometime. Here is a pic of me playing by the way, in case ur all curious:

At least the tux is black!!! Paint of course would damage the sound quality. My instrument is from 1880's. :nono:

try cuttin themiddleto shorten the length. Ur own custom mods are the best makes mods unique.

Deus, now that we know you make music with your hands, be CAREFUL with them power tools!!!

DeusExMaxima 03-12-2006 07:34 PM

Actually i do have to be careful with my hands being an attorney and musician. I got the first base on the spoiler. It looks like it will fit ncie when Im done I think. Here is the look Im looking for:

This is a Hamann spoiler on a BMW. Note the small gap where the spoiler is above the window.

The small gap should help reduce drag.

DeusExMaxima 03-13-2006 05:47 PM

My first task was to cut the base off at the same angle as the curve of the back window. I eyeballed it and of course it was pretty accurate. Then, using the pieces I cut off, I traced that shape onto some sheets of ABS plastic, slightly larger shapes, and cut out the shapes. I used ABS solvent and glued them onto the bottom. So now I had new bases which match the angle of the glass curvature.

I bought this 2-part epoxy putty and kneaded it together, like dough. I used this to fill in the gaps and create a smooth shape. This stuff one thin layer which I'll sand. And then Ill apply layers until its totally blended.

After the base is done, Ill work on the sides. Here are pics of my progress:

nice work deus. looks like it will add a very nice look to your max

I like the idea you are looking for. Those bmw pictures are nice. Can't wait to see the final product. Keep up the good work.

Why do we need downforce on the rear-end for a front wheel drive vehicle? Boggle....

If you are capable of mad speed in FWD, you need some rear downforce too.

 bwahahahahaha.... "mad speed" must occur after breaking the sound barrier, right?

DeusExMaxima 03-17-2006 04:25 PM

Well if ur driving fast, its good to have downforce on car for stability. I drove a Ferrari 360 Modena at 193 mph on freeway once and it was soooolid. If u direct the air over ur car to rear spoiler, it can actually decrease air resistance. The reason i want it is purely for looks, hehe.

FRISCOMAX415 03-18-2006 02:11 PM

Actually it looks cool, but the one on the trunk's gotta go. It looks a little WRXish!

Some might think 120MPH isn't all that fast. But 120MPH on a not so straight road/ condition, you'd want your rearend to stick too regardless of drive wheels.

The trunk spoiler IS actually from a WRX. It looks a lot better in person. It follows the lines of the maxima and looks better on it than the WRX. I worked on the roof spoiler more today. its slow going cuz i have to wait about 6-8 hours for the epoxy putty to dry. I'll prolly top it off with thin layer of bondo so it will have that smooooooth finish. I may have it ready for paint by tomorrow if all goes well.

nyautostyle 03-19-2006 08:44 AM

Deus, you always come up with these crazy ideas and mods.. keep it up man, i'm always interested! :) hope all is well

Thanks!! i appreciate it.

Disaster struck this morning as i dropped the spoiler, bounced it off the car and the base piece broke. Car slightly scratched too, but it buffed out. I glued the base piece back on, so it will be ok. Just a delay. Im waiting for glue to dry and then ill march on.

DeusExMaxima 03-20-2006 05:59 PM

I fixed the problems from yesterday, and put first thin layer of bondo on. I still need to shape the ends a bit more. Here are more pics taken a few min. ago:
